Can I store tires in a container?

The short answer

Yes, and tires are one of the easier loads. They do not mind damp, they do not rust, and they stack. What hurts them is sunlight, ozone and heat, which a closed steel box mostly blocks. Stack them on pallets off the floor, keep them out of direct door light, and add a vent for a long summer.

What a stack of tires outside looks like after two summers

Every shop in the region has seen the pile. Tires leaned against a fence line or stacked behind the building, out in the weather because there was nowhere else to put them. Two summers later the sidewalls have gone chalky gray, there is a spiderweb of fine cracks running across the shoulder, and the top casings are holding half an inch of standing water with mosquito larvae in it.

None of that damage came from rain. Rubber does not care about being wet. What did it was ultraviolet light hour after hour, the ozone in the outside air working on the surface, and the daily heat cycle baking the compound. The water only mattered because it pooled, bred mosquitoes and gave the wheels underneath something to rust in.

Put that same pile inside a closed steel box and three of those four attackers stop. No sunlight, very little air exchange carrying ozone, and no standing water in the casings. That is why tires do so well in a container while the same container is fussy about a mattress.

The rule underneath it: rubber ages by light, heat and air

Rubber compound breaks down through exposure, not through moisture. Ultraviolet light attacks the surface directly. Ozone in the air, which is present anywhere outdoors, works on the flex points and shows up as fine cracking. Heat speeds up the chemistry of both. Ordinary humidity does essentially nothing to a tire, which is the exact opposite of how furniture and paper behave.

That flips the usual container advice on its head. For most stored goods a sealed box is the risk and airflow is the fix. For rubber, the sealed dark box is most of the benefit, and the reason to add airflow is heat rather than moisture.

The one thing rubber shares with everything else is that it does not like sitting in water it cannot escape. Which is a floor problem, not an air problem.

How to stack them in the box

  1. Get them off the plywood. Pallets keep casings out of any floor moisture and keep the bottom tire from taking the full weight of everything above it against a hard surface.
  2. Stack unmounted tires flat, no more than a chest-high column, so the bottom ones do not deform under a tower of weight.
  3. Stand mounted tire and wheel assemblies upright rather than stacking them flat. The weight of the rims is what distorts a tread face over a season.
  4. Keep the stack back from the doors. The strip of floor right inside the cargo doors catches direct sun every time the box is open, and that is the only ultraviolet exposure left in the whole plan.
  5. Leave an aisle. A tire you cannot reach is a tire that gets rolled over four others, and that is how sidewalls get gouged.

Nothing about that list requires equipment or spending. It is stacking discipline, and it is most of what separates a good load from a mediocre one.

The two things worth actually checking

Summer heat

A closed box in full sun runs hot inside, and heat is the one attacker the steel does not block. For a household set of snow tires coming out in November, that does not matter. Weight on the floor

Tires are heavier as a stacked load than people expect, especially mounted on steel wheels. Spreading weight across pallets rather than concentrating it in one column is the sensible habit regardless of the number, and it matters even more if the box is sitting on blocks over soft ground. Shops versus the household set

For a family storing one seasonal set, a 20 ft is far more box than the job needs and the tires will happily share it with everything else. If you are moving house and the tires are riding along with the furniture, keep them well away from upholstery, since rubber odor transfers into fabric over a season.
