14-gauge Cor-Ten weathering steel, about 0.075 inches thick, is the standard wall panel on every container we sell or rent, 20 ft and 40 ft alike. Corrugated ribs make it feel heavier than that number suggests. Roof, floor and wall are three different builds, and wear varies by the individual used unit, so the honest way to know your box is to look at it.
The base gauge does not change between a one-trip and a used cargo-worthy container, and it does not change between a 20 ft and a 40 ft. What varies is condition. Cor-Ten steel is designed to form a protective rust patina and hold up outdoors for roughly 30 years, but a used container that has spent a decade at sea and a decade in a yard can show pitting, dents, or thin spots at the corners and along the bottom rail where moisture sits longest.
The gauge is the same across the fleet, but the condition of the specific steel in front of you is not, so a spec sheet only gets you halfway to a real answer. That is the whole reason we run a real yard in Woodlawn and a lot in Wytheville instead of selling off a listing photo. Walk the containers, knock on the panels, and pick the one you are comfortable with before it ever gets loaded on the truck.
If you cannot get to the yard in person, ask for close-up photos of the corners, the bottom rail and the door end, the three spots wear shows up first. That tells you more about a specific unit than a gauge number ever will.
Wall thickness is only one part of what makes a container strong, and the wall figure does not carry over to the roof, the floor or the frame. Each of those is built for a different job on a box designed to be craned, stacked and dragged, so each gets its own material and its own gauge. Quoting 14-gauge for the whole container is where people go wrong.
So when someone asks how thick the walls are, the honest answer covers the walls specifically. It says nothing about how the floor or the frame is built, and those matter just as much for what a container can take.
14-gauge steel measures out to roughly 0.075 inches, thinner than most people picture when they hear the words shipping container. What makes it strong is not the raw thickness of a flat sheet, it is the corrugated shape stamped into every wall panel, the same principle as corrugated cardboard or a metal roofing panel: a rippled profile resists bending far better than a flat sheet of the same material and thickness ever would.
Rap a knuckle on a container wall and it sounds and feels far sturdier than 0.075 inches suggests, and that shape is why.
The roof is the same Cor-Ten steel family as the walls, shaped into its own corrugated pattern to shed water and take foot traffic during loading, but it is a different panel with its own manufacturing tolerances, not a mirror of the wall gauge. The floor is not steel at all. It is marine-grade plywood over steel cross members, chosen because plywood flexes and grips better under a forklift than bare steel would.
That is worth knowing if you are picturing an all-steel box: the parts you touch most walking in and out are wood and painted steel, working together rather than one uniform material.
