A compacted gravel pad with solid concrete blocks under the four corners. That pairing drains water away from the steel and keeps the frame from settling unevenly, at a fraction of what a poured slab costs. Bare, firm, well drained ground can work for a short term rental in a dry spot. A container that becomes a workshop, office, or any permanent build earns a full slab or piers instead.
Water does more damage to a container base than weight ever will. The four corner posts carry the entire load, so a wet, unstable spot underneath them causes more trouble over time than skipping concrete ever does. Grade a bed of compacted gravel a few inches higher in the center than at the edges, so rain drains away instead of sitting under the box, then set solid blocks beneath each corner. That combination keeps the steel dry and off the dirt for as long as the container sits there.
Give the pad a little extra room on every side, past where the container's own footprint ends. A 20 ft box covers about 160 square feet and a 40 ft covers about 320, so even sizing generously is not much extra gravel. Keeping the corners well inside the pad, rather than right at its edge, means the load never lands on loose material that hasn't been compacted.
Gravel and blocks are built for a box that might move again someday: a rental, a jobsite unit, storage that could relocate in a few years. The math changes once the container stops being a box and starts being a building. A workshop conversion, an office, or anything with a floor people will walk across every day for the next decade wants a foundation that carries weight anywhere across the floor, not just at four corners.
A full slab gives that kind of build a finished floor that won't shift under years of foot traffic and tool carts. Piers under the corners do most of the same job with far less concrete, if a raised floor suits the use better than one poured tight to the container. Either way, a permanent build is also the point where a call to your own county is worth making before anyone pours.
Clay holds water long after a storm passes. Sandy or rocky ground drains fast and dries out in a day. A spot that looks solid in August can turn spongy by March, which is exactly the test worth running before committing to a base: walk the spot after a hard rain and see whether it gives underfoot. If it does, gravel is not optional. It's the difference between a container that stays square and one with a corner that slowly sinks.
Slope matters less than people expect, since our crew levels every drop on blocks regardless, but a steep grade usually needs grading first no matter what goes under the box. None of this is a figure you can look up for your particular lot. It's a walk you take yourself, in boots, after rain.
Placing and leveling the container is part of every delivery we run, not a separate service.
