Container chassis

Definition

A container chassis is a wheeled steel frame built to carry a shipping container over the road, with locking pins called twist locks that clamp into the container's corner castings so the box rides securely at highway speed. It's the standard way containers move between ports, rail yards and distribution centers, and it is a different piece of equipment from the tilt-bed trailer Containers Delivered uses for local delivery.

What actually happens when a container rides a chassis

Watch a port or an intermodal rail yard for a few minutes and you'll see the whole job happen: a truck backs a bare wheeled frame in under a stacked container, a crane or reach stacker lowers the box down onto it, four twist locks snap up into the corner castings, and the rig rolls out onto the highway riding higher than a typical flatbed load. None of that happens at the Woodlawn yard.

A chassis is built to move a container long distances between big facilities, not to set one down gently in a customer's driveway. It has no way to tilt, tip or slide a box off; something else, usually a crane, has to lift the container on and off it.

Why the corner castings carry every pound

A shipping container isn't engineered to bear weight along its bottom rails the way a trailer deck does. It carries its entire load through the four steel corner castings at its ends, the same points a crane hook grabs and the same points a chassis's twist locks clamp onto. Everything that touches a container professionally, chassis, crane, or the blocks under it once it's set, is built around those four points.

That's also why leveling a delivered container is about those same four corners, not the ground under the middle of the box.

Why a chassis isn't what shows up at your site

A chassis solves a highway-hauling problem: moving a loaded container efficiently between facilities that already have cranes or reach stackers to load and unload it. A residential driveway, a farm gate or a jobsite doesn't have that equipment sitting around, so it needs a delivery method that can set the box down by itself.
