Ground pressure describes how a shipping container transfers its weight into the earth beneath it. A container carries its load through the four corner castings at its base, not evenly across the floor, so the ground under those four points does the real work while the middle of the footprint barely feels the box at all.
Most people sizing up a spot for a container ask the wrong question. They picture a big steel box and assume the ground under the whole footprint needs to hold it up, the way a slab holds up a building. That's not how a shipping container is built.
A container was engineered to stack five and six high on a ship, which means every ounce of load in the stack runs down through the four corner castings at the bottom, straight through the corner posts. Set it on the ground and nothing changes about that path. The floor structure spans between the corners; it isn't a slab bearing its own weight into the dirt.
Because the load concentrates at four points instead of spreading out, the deciding question for any site is simple: can those four spots, specifically, carry the weight without sinking? Not the whole footprint. Just the corners.
That's why a firm, well-drained patch of ground with nothing under it at all can hold a container fine, while a soft or saturated spot fails even though it looks flat and open. The dirt in the middle of the box was never asked to do anything. The dirt under the corners gets asked to hold real, concentrated weight.
Solid concrete blocks under each corner casting work by widening the footprint of that point load. A corner post is small; a block spreads the same weight over a larger bearing area, which lowers the pressure per square inch of ground underneath it. That's the whole engineering behind why blocking under the corners, not a slab under everything, is standard practice for storage use.
A gravel pad helps for a related but different reason: it drains, so the soil under the load stays firm instead of turning soft after rain. Combine a crowned gravel pad with solid blocks at the corners and you've addressed both halves of the problem, drainage and bearing area, at once.
A rough field check: walk the exact spots where the corners will land and press down hard with a boot heel. If it gives noticeably or the ground feels spongy after rain, that spot will let a corner settle under load, even if the rest of the yard around it is rock solid. Firm, dry ground at all four corners is what matters, not the acreage in between.
