Pull-in clearance

Also called Straight Pull-In

Definition

Pull-in clearance is the straight, unobstructed run of ground a tilt-bed truck needs ahead of the spot where a container will sit so it can slide the box off and set it down without stopping short or backing up partway through. Containers Delivered plans on roughly 65 feet of straight clearance for a 20-ft container and about 95 feet for a 40-ft, plus 10 to 12 feet of width for the truck and trailer.

The decision this measurement actually settles

The decision most people are actually trying to make before delivery day isn't which container to buy, it's whether their driveway can take the truck at all. Pull-in clearance is the number that answers it, and it's worth pinning down before the container itself, since a great deal on a used box does you no good if the truck can't reach the spot.

Everything else about site prep, gravel, blocks, clearing branches, matters, but pull-in clearance is the one that decides whether a delivery happens on the scheduled day or gets rescheduled at the driveway.

Where 65 feet and 95 feet come from

A tilt-bed doesn't get craned straight down; it eases off a moving truck. The trailer's bed tips into a ramp and the container slides off the lowered end as the truck pulls forward, which means the truck needs room to travel that whole distance in a straight line, not just space to park next to the drop point.

That distance tracks the container's own length plus room for the trailer and truck ahead of it, which is why a 40-ft container needs meaningfully more room than a 20-ft, about 95 feet against about 65.

How to measure your own approach

Walk the route a delivery truck would actually take, from the road to the exact spot the container will sit, and look for tight turns, gateposts, soft shoulders and sharp grade changes along the way, not just at the drop point itself. A curved driveway that looks fine end to end can still fail this test if no single stretch of it runs straight for the needed distance.

If the approach is tight, curved or runs uphill, don't guess. A quick photo or a phone call clears it up faster than pacing it off yourself.

What happens if your access comes up short

If your site genuinely can't offer a straight run that long, that's worth knowing before a truck gets dispatched, not after. Call and describe what you've got. Some sites just need the drop spot moved a few feet to catch a straighter stretch of driveway; others need a different plan entirely.
