Can I move a shipping container myself?

The short answer

Rarely. An empty 20 ft container runs roughly 4,800 to 5,100 pounds and a 40 ft close to double that, with no wheels and nothing to take hold of but the corner castings. Shifting one a short distance with a machine rated for the load is possible. Hauling one down a road is a truck job, and dragging one racks the frame.

Start with what you are actually trying to move

Weight is where most of these plans quietly end. An empty 20 ft container sits somewhere around 4,800 to 5,100 pounds. An empty 40 ft is close to double, in the neighborhood of 8,000 to 8,800. Those are ballpark figures for standard boxes. The exact tare weight of the one sitting in your yard is stenciled on the door beside the CSC plate, because used steel varies from unit to unit and the box tells you its own number.

Then put something in it. Tools, feed, furniture, a season of hay: a working container carries several times its empty weight, and the rated maximum stamped on most boxes is far past anything you would attempt without a truck under it. Nothing about a container was scaled to the equipment most people have in the barn.

Four things that change the answer

Rarely is not never. Whether any part of this is yours to do comes down to four questions, and they stack on each other.

  • Distance. Easing a box ten feet across level gravel and hauling it eight miles down a state road are not the same job and they do not use the same equipment.
  • Empty or loaded. Empty is the only version worth considering. Anything loose inside shifts the moment the box tips or slides, and weight that moves on its own is how a slow job becomes a fast one.
  • Ground. Slope, a wet spring, frost coming out of the dirt. A container that will slide across dry packed gravel will dig a trench in ground that gave underfoot when you walked it.
  • What the machine is rated for. Not what it has picked up before. The rating on the plate, read against the real weight of the box.

Moving one a few feet on your own ground

This is the version that genuinely gets done, and it gets done slowly.

On the ground the box rests on its four bottom corner castings, and those are the points a machine has to take hold of. That is the rule everything else follows from. Chains go to the castings, not around a door frame. A machine takes hold there, rated well above the tare weight, not somewhere convenient. Rollers go under the bottom rails, not under the middle of the floor. Anything that pushes on a side panel is pushing on sheet metal that was never asked to carry a load, and it will oil can and dent long before the box decides to move.

Everything else is a bad idea with a good story attached to it. Chaining the box to a pickup and pulling. Levering it along with a tractor bucket. Letting a corner come off its blocks and hoping it lands square. Steel this heavy does not forgive a mistake even at walking speed, and once it starts to go there is nothing useful you can do about it.

The damage shows up in the doors, weeks later

A container is its own frame. The corner posts and the rails hold the shape, and the doors only swing true for as long as that shape stays square. Pull a box by one corner and you twist the frame a little. Nothing looks wrong that afternoon. The box is still a box.

Then some cold morning the locking bars will not seat, or one door leads the other by half an inch, or you find water tracking in along the top of the door frame after a hard rain. Racking is quiet, it is cumulative, and it is not easy to take back out. It is the most expensive outcome of a move that otherwise went almost fine.

Setting it back down is half the job. The corners go on blocks, they get checked, and both doors get opened all the way and closed again before anybody walks off.
