Yes, by one of two honest routes: a buried feed from your existing service, or a small solar setup for lights. The rough-in happens in our shop: panel, outlets, switches and fixtures. Energizing it is not our part, and the connection, grounding and inspection go to a licensed electrician. Nobody here files a permit for you, and the trench across the field is its own job.
Picture the box where you want it. Now walk back to the nearest panel. On most farms that walk is longer than people guess: past the barn lot, across a hay field, maybe under a lane the tractor crosses every day. That distance is the project. Everything else is small by comparison.
Distance costs two ways. It costs trench, which around here means rock about as often as it means dirt, and a rented machine or a neighbor with a trencher. And it costs wire, because voltage sags over a long run, so the conductors get fatter the farther you go. A long run is not the same job as a short one with a longer piece of wire in it.
Then there is what crosses the trench afterward. A feed under a hay field has to be deep enough that nothing you pull through there ever finds it. A feed under a gravel lane has to survive a loaded truck. Mark the route before it is covered, and take a photograph of the open trench with something recognizable in the frame, because in four years you will not remember where it runs.
Frost is the other ground fact. Steel, wire and conduit all move with the seasons here, and a shallow line under ground that heaves is a line you will be digging up again.
This is the rule behind everything above, and we want it plain rather than buried in a footnote.
Our part is the rough-in, done here before the box ever goes on a truck. Panel mounted, conduit run, boxes set, outlets and switches and light fixtures installed inside the container. It is real work, and it is the half nobody enjoys doing out in an open field with the wind blowing.
What we never do is energize it. Tying into your service, sizing conductors and the breaker for the length of the run, grounding, bonding and getting it inspected all belong to a licensed electrician. Permit filing is not ours either, and we put no signature on anybody's wiring. Anyone promising you a container that shows up ready to plug in is describing a different arrangement than this one.
The practical version: bring your electrician into the conversation before we build, not after we deliver. If they tell us what they want and where they want it entering the box, the rough-in comes out matching the plan and their day on site gets short. That sequencing saves more money than any other decision on this project.
Ask what the power is actually for. On a surprising number of farm containers the true answer is: light, so I can find things, and a way to charge a battery or a phone.
That load does not justify a trench across a hay field. A panel on the roof, a charge controller, a battery and a few LED fixtures covers it, and the roof is already up out of the way where nothing walks on it or backs into it. How much sun it actually gets depends on where you set the box, so pick the spot with that in mind. It goes in without a machine, without a trench and without disturbing ground you farm.
Where solar runs out is anything with a motor or a heating element. A compressor, a welder, a well pump, a cooler, a heater: those want the real service, and a small off grid setup will not carry them. Be honest about the list now, because a trench you skip today and need in two years costs the same as it would have cost today, plus the second machine rental.
The middle case is a box that sits close to an existing building. If the container is going forty feet off the shop, the trench is a morning's work and the wired option wins outright. Distance is the whole variable.
Plenty of field containers get their power from a generator for a few hours at a time, and there is nothing wrong with that as long as two things are true.
A word on where the wire enters the container. Any penetration through the steel is a hole in a box whose entire virtue is that it is sealed. It wants to be a proper fitting, sealed, and on a wall rather than the roof if there is any choice, because the roof is where water sits. If we do the rough-in, we make that penetration in the shop where it can be done right and finished properly.
Four things make this conversation short. The distance from your nearest service to the drop spot, roughly. What you intend to plug in. Whether the run crosses anything a machine cannot cross. And whether you already have an electrician, because the answer changes what we build.
