Yes. A skylight is a framed opening in the roof panel, not a wall cut turned sideways: the roof takes standing water and snow load directly, so it needs a welded curb and proper flashing, not just a frame around glass. Done right, a skylight lights the middle of a container that wall windows cannot reach, without costing you any wall space.
A wall window and a roof skylight both start the same way, cutting an opening into corrugated steel and welding a frame around it so the load travels around the hole instead of through it. Past that point they are different jobs. A wall sheds rain sideways and down, and water that gets past the seal usually runs off before it does damage. A roof takes rain and snow directly, and anything that is not properly detailed sits and pools right where you least want standing water, on top of the container. Building a skylight to wall-window standards is the mistake that shows up as a stain on the ceiling a year later.
The correct fix is a welded curb, a raised steel collar around the opening that lifts the glazing above the roof surface, plus flashing that laps over the curb the way flashing works on any roof penetration. Water hits the roof, runs toward the curb, and sheds around it instead of pooling against a flat seam. A frame alone, without the curb and the flashing detail, is the shortcut that works on a dry day and fails the first time snow sits on the roof and slowly melts against the glass.
Wall windows light the area right in front of them and leave the middle of a long container relatively dim, especially on a 40 ft box. A skylight lights straight down into the center of the room, which is exactly the space wall glass struggles to reach. That makes it worth asking about on office and workshop builds where the goal is even daylight across the whole floor, not just near the walls. It also costs you nothing in wall space, which matters more on a 20 ft container where every foot of wall is also a foot of shelving you did not add.
Every window is a section of insulation you gave up and the softest point in an otherwise sealed steel box. A skylight carries both of those trades and adds the weather exposure on top, since it faces straight up into sun, rain, hail and snow instead of sideways into it. That is not a reason to skip one. It is a reason to spec it deliberately: tell us if the build is insulated, whether a mini split is part of the plan, and how the room will actually be used, so the skylight gets sized and placed as part of the build rather than added as an afterthought.
