The short answer

Yes. A man door, also called a personnel door, is a steel walk-in door welded into a framed opening in the container wall, and our shop fits them on 20 ft and 40 ft boxes alike. The question worth thinking about is not whether it can be done. It is how often you open the container, and which direction you walk up from.

The real decision is how many times a week you go in

Most people arrive here already sure a walk-in door is possible and unsure whether a second opening is worth cutting. That is the right thing to be weighing, and the deciding factor is frequency. A container you open twice a year for Christmas decorations does not need one. A container you open before work and again after supper does.

Cargo doors were built for a port. They are tall, they are heavy, they need a clear arc of ground to swing at all, and both usually have to come open before you can reach anything past the first few feet. Add snow, mud or a frozen padlock and a thirty second errand becomes a chore you start avoiding.

A walk-in door turns the container from something you open into something you enter. The cargo end stays shut, sealed and locked for the days you need the full width.

After that, your approach path decides the placement

Two things get settled before the grinder comes out, and both come down to how you will walk up to the container once it sits on your ground.

Side wall or end wall

A door in the side wall near one end is the usual pick. It lands on the path that already runs from the house, the barn or the shop, and it leaves the cargo end free. On a 40 ft box, sliding it a good way down the wall roughly halves the carry to the far end. An end wall door is the easier cut and the right call when the box backs onto a bank.

Which way it swings

Container doors almost always want to open outward, because a door swinging inward eats floor you were going to shelve. Which side it hinges on comes down to the direction you approach from and which face the wind crosses. That is a free decision at quote time and an expensive one afterwards.

You step up into it, and that is on purpose

The floor of a container sits on top of the steel underframe rather than on the dirt, so a door cut into the wall opens above ground level no matter where it goes. That step is doing a job. It holds weather out, and the way the threshold gets built is most of what separates a doorway that stays dry from one that leaves a rust streak down the wall underneath.

Every cut we make gets a welded steel frame around it, and the door hangs in that frame pitched so runoff at the sill drains out and away instead of tracking back inside.

This is the honest cost and we would rather say it plainly. What makes a container hard to get into is that it is a closed steel shell with a single, heavily built opening. Cut a walk-in door and there are now two ways in, and the new one has ordinary door hardware on it.

That is not a reason to skip the mod. It is a reason to spec the door rather than treat it as an afterthought. A commercial grade steel door hung in a welded steel frame is a serious door. A light slab in a thin frame is the weak spot in an otherwise excellent container. Your cargo end keeps its welded lockbox either way, since that is standard on every container we sell and rent.
