Windows: the mod that changes how it feels.

Every other modification on this site changes what a container can do. Windows change what it is like to be inside one, which is a different kind of upgrade and the reason offices and retail builds get them and storage containers usually do not.

A windowless steel box lit by fixtures is a storage building no matter how nicely it is finished. Cut two windows into it and people stop describing it as a container. This page covers what the cut involves, where glass belongs, and the security cost that comes with it, because windows are the single biggest trade in the catalogue.

Framed into the wall, not fitted to it

A window opening is the same fabrication problem as a door opening, at a smaller scale. The corrugated wall is structural, so cutting an opening into it removes stiffness that has to be put back before anything gets mounted.

We cut the opening, weld in a steel frame around all four sides so load travels around the hole rather than through it, and set the window into that frame. The window is carried by steel we added, never by the corrugated panel itself.

Corrugation is also why the sill matters. A container wall is a series of peaks and valleys, and a horizontal cut across them leaves an edge that will happily channel water sideways into the opening if it is not detailed properly. The sill gets built to shed water out and away, which is the difference between a window that stays dry and one that stains the wall under it within a year.

Windows are the mod where cheap work shows fastest. A poorly framed opening racks slightly, and a window in a racked opening stops sealing, sticks, and eventually cracks. The framing is the job.

Everything is cut, welded and finished in our own shop in Woodlawn. The person detailing your sill is the person you spoke to about the build.

Two windows beat one, and height decides the room

Window placement in a container is mostly about two things people do not think about until afterwards: cross light and desk height.

Cross light

One window on one wall lights the area right in front of it and leaves the rest of a long narrow box in contrast, which reads as gloomy even when it is technically bright enough. Two windows on opposite walls, offset rather than facing each other, light the space evenly and make a 20 ft container feel considerably larger than the same box with a single larger window.

Height

In an office build, windows want to sit above desk height, high enough that a desk can go under them and low enough to see out of when seated. Get that wrong by a few inches and you have a window that a monitor blocks, or one you can only see the sky from.

  • Offset windows on opposite walls give cross light and cross ventilation at the same time.
  • Windows on the long walls beat windows in the ends on a 40 ft container, because the ends light almost nothing.
  • Keep glass off the face that takes the weather, if the site gives you a choice.
  • The wall a window occupies is wall you cannot shelve, which matters more on a 20 than a 40.

The hub also fits roof skylights, which are the other way to get daylight in. They light the middle of a long container in a way wall windows cannot, and they do not cost you any wall. They are worth asking about if the build is an office or a workshop rather than a retail front.

Glass is a hole in your insulation

If the container is insulated, every window is a section of wall that is not. That is not a reason to skip them, it is a reason to spec them alongside the insulation rather than after it.

Windows also turn a container into a greenhouse faster than most buildings, because there is so little thermal mass in the shell to buffer the gain. A south facing window on a steel box in July puts a lot of heat into a small volume, and if the build has a mini split sized for an insulated container without glass, it will now be undersized.

  • Insulated glazing units are worth it in any build someone works in year round.
  • Opening windows give you ventilation for free, which pairs with the vents rather than replacing them.
  • Orientation does real work. The same window is a comfort upgrade on one wall and a heat problem on another.
  • Tell us if a mini split is in the plan, so the glazing and the unit get sized against each other.

Openable windows are also the cheapest ventilation in the build, but they are not a substitute for vents. Vents work continuously, including when the container is locked and nobody is there, which is exactly when condensation forms. Windows work when someone opens them.

The biggest trade in the catalogue

Our security page makes this argument in full and it applies double to glass. The whole basis of a container's security is that it is sealed steel with a single hardened way in. Glass is the softest way in you can create.

A personnel door is still a steel door in a steel frame. A roll up door is still a steel curtain. A window is glass, and no amount of good framing changes what glass is.

That is completely fine for the builds windows belong in. An office on a staffed site, a retail or pop up front, a workshop in your own yard, a jobsite office that is occupied during the day and holds nothing overnight. In all of those the daylight is worth far more than the marginal security.

Where windows do not belong is a storage container sitting somewhere remote and unwatched, holding things worth taking. That is the build where we will suggest skylights or nothing at all, and we would rather say so than sell you the mod.

If a build needs both glass and security, the answer is usually to put every window on one face, point that face at the house, the shop or the road you can see, and keep the other three sides sealed. Security screens are also an option, and they are their own conversation.

Worth it, and not worth it

Worth putting windows in

  • Mobile offices. Not really optional. Nobody wants to spend a working day in a windowless steel box, and this is the build windows exist for.
  • Retail and pop up. The window is the storefront. Paint, signage and glass together are what make the container read as a shop rather than a box.
  • Workshops you spend real time in. Daylight over a bench is worth more than the same money spent on more fixtures.
  • Anything occupied. If people are inside it regularly, glass changes the experience more than any other line on the quote.

Usually not

  • Remote or unwatched storage. The one build where we will actively talk you out of it.
  • Jobsite storage that holds tools overnight. The container is doing exactly one job and glass works against it.
  • Farm, feed and kennel builds. These want ventilation and durability. Vents and louvers do the air job without the glass.
  • Anything that will be moved often. More openings, more to check every time it travels.

We fit windows into containers you buy from us, containers you rent month to month, and containers you already own if they are structurally sound and wind and water tight. Windows are usually part of a longer build rather than a standalone job, and a full build out with insulation, electrical, lighting and finished walls typically runs one to a few weeks depending on scope and parts.
