Can you add windows to a container?

The short answer

Yes. Our shop cuts window openings into container walls, welds a steel frame around all four sides, and sets the glass into that frame. Where people go wrong is treating glass as a late addition. Windows change the insulation, the cooling and the security of a build, so they belong in the plan from the first conversation.

The mistake: one big window, decided last

The request we hear most often is for a single large window, added at the end of a build that has already been priced and drawn. Both halves of that are backwards, and both are fixable in one phone call before we cut.

A lone opening throws a bright band across the floor beneath it, and past that band a container is long, narrow and dim. The container reads as gloomy even when a light meter says it is bright enough. That is a geometry problem, and making the single window bigger does not solve it. It just makes one end brighter and the far end darker by comparison.

Deciding late is the more expensive half. Glass interacts with everything else in the build. It is a gap in your insulation, it is a heat gain a cooling unit has to answer for, it is wall you can no longer shelve, and it is the softest way into an otherwise sealed steel box. Add it after those decisions are made and you are undoing three of them.

The approach that works: two offset openings, planned early

Two smaller windows on opposite walls, offset from each other rather than lined up, will light a 20 ft container more evenly than a single large opening ever does, and the box feels considerably bigger for it. Offsetting them also gives you cross ventilation on any day the weather is worth having open.

  • On a 40 ft box, glass belongs in the long walls. Windows in the ends light almost nothing behind them
  • In an office build, set the sill above desk height, high enough to slide a desk under and low enough to see out of sitting down
  • Keep glass off the face that takes your weather if the site gives you any choice at all
  • Ask about roof skylights, which light the middle of a long container and cost you no wall

Get the sill height wrong by a few inches and you end up with a window a monitor blocks, or one that shows you nothing but sky. That is a five minute conversation before fabrication and a much longer one afterwards.

Framing and the sill are where cheap work shows first

A window opening is the same structural problem as a door opening at a smaller scale. Those ribbed side panels are doing structural work. The folds are what hold a container square while it hangs off a lifting frame or settles onto gravel that never sits level. Cut into it and that stiffness has to be replaced before anything gets mounted.

So we weld a steel frame around the full perimeter of the cut, and the window is carried by the steel we added rather than by the panel we cut. A window in a poorly framed opening racks slightly over time, then stops sealing, then sticks, then cracks.

The sill gets its own attention because of the corrugation. A horizontal cut runs across a run of peaks and valleys, and every one of those valleys will happily walk water sideways into the opening unless the sill is built to throw it out and away. That detail is the difference between a window that is still dry in year five and a stain down the wall under it by next spring.

Glass and insulation get specced against each other

If the container is insulated, every window is a piece of wall that is not. That is not an argument against windows. It is an argument for deciding on them at the same time as the insulation instead of afterwards.

A steel box also heats up faster than a stick built room, because there is very little mass in the shell to soak up the gain. A window facing the afternoon sun in July puts real heat into a small volume. If a mini split was sized for an insulated container with no glass in it, adding two windows leaves that unit undersized on the hottest week of the year.

Insulated glazing earns its keep in anything somebody works in year round. Openable sashes give you free ventilation, though they are not a replacement for vents, since vents keep working when the box is locked and empty, which is exactly when condensation forms. The build where the right answer is no glass

Glass earns its place in a workshop standing in your own yard, in an office, in a pop-up or retail front, and in a jobsite office that has people in it through the day and nothing worth taking in it overnight. Every one of those trades a weak spot for daylight, and the daylight wins.

The build where we will talk you out of glass is a storage container parked somewhere remote and unwatched with valuable contents inside. A steel door is still steel and a roll-up curtain is still steel. Glass is glass, and no amount of good framing changes what it is. For that job we will suggest a skylight, or nothing at all, and tell you why.
