Usually no. A container set level on blocks holds itself down with its own weight, and ordinary storage in this region needs nothing more. Anchoring becomes a real question in three cases: an empty box on exposed high ground, containers stacked two high, and any unit fastened to a slab as a permanent structure, where county building rules take over.
The weight is the tie-down. It bears on four corner castings, sitting on solid block, on ground that drains, and that is the whole holding system for a storage box. On the overwhelming majority of sites our truck rolls into, it is enough. Steel that heavy does not skate around a yard, and a load inside only pins it down harder. So the honest default answer is no, you do not need tie-downs on a storage container.
The default holds until one of these is true about your setup:
Notice that two of the three are about what you are doing with the container, not about the weather. That is normally how this goes. Wind sets the stakes, but it is your plan that decides whether an engineer needs to look at the anchoring.
If you do anchor, the load has to go into the four corner castings, because nothing else on a container was built to be pulled on. They are the same fittings a crane picks it up by and the same ones a twistlock grabs on a ship. Everything else is thinner than it looks.
Which rules out the improvised version people picture first. A strap thrown over the roof loads roof panel that was never meant to carry a point load, and it can dish the panel and pond water long before it ever resists a gust. Corrugated side wall is the same story. Pull on the castings or do not pull at all.
And before you spend anything on anchors, spend the attention on the doors. A cargo door swung open is a broad flat panel hanging on two hinges, and a gust catching one will bend the locking bars long before the box itself is in any danger.
The other half is the ground. An auger or helical anchor is only worth the holding power of the soil it is turned into, and around here that swings from good clay to rock to a plow layer over shale within one property. An anchor sunk in soft ground is worse than no anchor, because you will stop worrying about a box that is still free to move.
Inside 75 road miles of Woodlawn there is no charge for the trip or for setting the box. The tilt-bed eases it off the back as the truck creeps forward, the crew works blocks under the four castings until a level reads true, and nobody drives away until both doors swing and latch clean. The welded lockbox is already on there, so you can hang a padlock and walk off.
Level is the part that quietly matters here. Set a box down out of level and the doors start to bind, and by the next season you are fighting the locking bars every time you want in. Getting that right does more for a box in weather than most of the hardware people ask us about.
