Cross that line and the arithmetic changes. The trip becomes something we have to price on its own, and what we are pricing is a road, not the gap between two dots on a screen.
This is ridge country. One address forty miles out is nearly all four lane road and an easy morning. Another one exactly as far away is a climb, a run of switchbacks and a gravel last half mile, and it eats an extra hour each way. A flat per mile figure would be wrong for about half of them, so we look up the road a loaded flatbed would really take and price that instead.
