9 feet 6 inches on the outside, a full foot taller than a standard 8 foot 6 inch box. That figure is exterior, not headroom. Clear interior height runs roughly 8 feet 10 inches against roughly 7 feet 10 inches in a standard container, so the extra foot is nearly all usable. Length, width and floor footprint stay identical to a standard 40 ft.
Both heights people quote, 8 feet 6 inches and 9 feet 6 inches, are measured from the ground to the top of the roof with the box sitting on its corner castings. Neither one is the space between the floor you stand on and the panel over your head. Inside a standard container that clear height lands around 7 feet 10 inches. Inside a high-cube it lands around 8 feet 10 inches.
So the extra foot outside is very nearly a full extra foot inside. That is the part worth holding onto: the gap between the two sizes is the same foot whether you measure it outside or in. Both interior numbers are approximate, because used boxes vary. The exact height for the unit you are buying is stencilled beside the CSC plate on its own door.
Height is genuinely the only variable. A high-cube isn't a wider or longer box, it's a taller one, so if you're choosing based on floor space alone, the high-cube adds nothing over a standard 40 ft.
The height pays off the moment you're stacking rather than just laying things flat on the floor. Tall pallets, machinery that clips 8 feet, or a build-out where you're finishing walls and a ceiling and don't want to feel boxed in, all of those are reasons people choose a high-cube over a standard 40 ft. It also carries roughly 2,690 cubic feet of volume against about 2,390 for a standard 40 ft, which matters more than the floor number for anyone measuring by what they can pack in, not just what they can walk on.
The sizes we keep in the yard are 20 ft and 40 ft. A 20 ft high-cube exists as a size, but it is a specialty configuration we source to order rather than something sitting on the lot in Woodlawn. Nine and a half feet of steel changes what has to be clear above the spot more than what has to be clear around it. The doors still swing off the end, so the working room out front is the same. What catches people is overhead: a limb that a standard box would slide under, the power drop to the house, a carport edge, a low gutter line. Walk the route once with your eyes up before you settle on the spot.
The ground side does not change at all. Same 40 foot footprint, same tilt-bed truck, same straight pull-in of about 95 feet. If a standard 40 ft fits your approach, a high-cube fits it too, as long as nothing hangs over the path it has to travel.
