Buyback

Definition

A buyback is an arrangement where the original seller agrees to repurchase a container from the person who bought it, usually at a reduced value tied to its age and condition. It's a resale agreement, not a warranty, a refund, or a guaranteed exit plan, and not every dealer offers one.

Private resale, since containers hold value

The mistake: assuming buyback is standard

It's easy to picture buying a container the way you'd buy a car with a trade-in program built in, assuming any dealer will simply take it back later for some credit. That's not how the industry works by default. A buyback has to be its own separate agreement, offered and written down by a specific seller, not something that comes bundled with every purchase automatically.

What a buyback actually is, when it exists

Where a seller does offer one, it works like a resale: they agree in advance to buy the container back from you later, typically at a number that reflects the box's age and condition at that point, not the original price. It isn't a refund, since you've had use of the container in the meantime, and it isn't a warranty claim, since it isn't tied to anything being wrong with the unit.

Where we stand on it

Containers Delivered doesn't publish a standing buyback program. That's a straight answer, not a soft no: if a guaranteed repurchase matters to your plans, ask directly when you call rather than assuming it exists or assuming it doesn't.

What still works instead

A container is one of the few things that holds its value, lasts about 30 years outdoors, and doesn't need a buyback clause to be worth something later, since a private resale is always an option once you no longer need it. If you're genuinely unsure whether you'll want the box long-term, renting first, with the possibility of applying rent toward a purchase later, keeps that decision open longer than committing to an outright buy.

Selling privately later is also worth thinking about before you buy, not after. Keep the bill of sale, keep the container in reasonable shape, and a used cargo-worthy box in solid condition tends to find a buyer without much trouble, since the steel underneath doesn't wear out the way most things people store in one do.

Not as a published, standing offer. Call and ask directly if a guaranteed repurchase matters to your decision.
No. A buyback is a separate resale agreement at a later value, not a refund of what you originally paid.
Yes. Containers hold their value well and can be sold privately whenever you're done with one, buyback agreement or not.
