Frost heave

Definition

Frost heave is the upward and uneven movement of the ground that happens when water in the soil freezes and expands, then thaws and settles again. Under a container foundation, repeated freeze-thaw cycles can lift or shift a corner over a winter or two, which is why drainage matters as much as the footing material itself.

The decision buyers are actually trying to make

Anyone asking about frost heave is usually really asking one thing: will my container's foundation move on me after a hard winter? That's a fair worry in this part of the country, where the ground genuinely freezes and thaws through a normal season. The deciding factor isn't the footing material you pick. It's how wet the ground stays underneath it.

Dry soil doesn't heave much no matter how cold it gets, because there's little water in it to freeze and expand. Saturated soil heaves whether it's under a concrete block, a railroad tie, or the edge of a slab. Drainage decides the outcome before the footing choice ever does.

How the movement actually happens under a container

Water in the soil freezes from the top down and expands as ice forms, pushing the ground surface upward. When it thaws, that same ground settles back down, but not always to exactly where it started, and not always evenly across all four corners of a container. One corner sitting in slightly wetter ground than the others can heave a little more, and that unevenness is what shows up as a container that's suddenly out of level after being fine all fall.

It's a slow, seasonal problem, not a one-time event. A single freeze rarely moves anything dramatically. Years of repeated cycles on a poorly drained corner is where real settling and shifting shows up.

The deciding factor: get water away from the footing, not just off the top

Since wet soil is what heaves, the single most useful thing a site can have is water that doesn't sit near the footing in the first place:

  • A crowned gravel pad sheds rain off the middle instead of letting it pool under the container.
  • A shallow swale on the uphill side of a sloped site keeps runoff from routing straight under the box.
  • Solid blocks set on well-drained gravel, rather than directly on bare clay, keep the footing itself out of standing water.

Get the water managed and the footing choice matters far less. Skip drainage and even a good footing is fighting the same problem year after year.
