Also called roof light, container skylight
A skylight panel is a glazed unit set into a raised, welded curb cut into the roof of a steel shipping container, lighting the middle of the space that wall windows cannot reach. Because the roof takes standing water and snow directly, a skylight panel needs a curb and flashing built for a roof, not a frame built for a wall.
It starts the same way a wall window does. A torch cuts an opening into the corrugated steel, and a welder builds a frame around the hole so the roof panel carries its load around the opening instead of through it. That part is identical to a wall cut, and it is where the resemblance ends.
For a roof, the frame gets built up into a curb, a raised steel collar that lifts the glazing above the surrounding roof plane instead of sitting flush with it. Flashing then laps over that curb the same way flashing works on a chimney or a vent stack on a house roof, directing water around the opening instead of letting it pool against a seam. Leave the curb out and mount the glazing in a flat frame instead, and the shortcut looks fine right up until winter, when melting snow sitting on the roof finds the seam and creeps in underneath the glass.
A wall drains sideways and downward under gravity, so a small failure in a wall seal usually sheds off before it turns into a real problem. A roof, by contrast, holds whatever lands on it, rain, snow, meltwater, right on the surface, so a poorly detailed opening becomes a puddle sitting on top of the container instead of runoff. That difference is the rule a skylight has to be built to, and it is why our shop specs a roof opening on its own terms instead of borrowing a wall window's detailing.
The practical upside of getting it right is real. A skylight panel lights the center of a container that side windows physically cannot reach, without giving up any wall space for it, which matters most in an office or workshop build where every wall is already doing a job.
A ceiling light and a pair of side windows are not solving the same problem. One puts light where the walls cannot reach it, the other adds cross-breeze along with the light, and a lot of office and workshop builds end up wanting both rather than picking one. Where an insulated build is in the plan, the skylight curb and flashing get specced alongside the rest of the roof and wall assembly rather than added afterward, for the same reason we treat insulation and ventilation as one job on our insulation page: getting the moisture path right the first time is cheaper than fixing it later.
Any opening in a container, wall or roof, is a decision about the box's security and weathertightness as much as its daylight, which is why a skylight gets specced with the rest of your modification plan rather than added as an afterthought.
