Can I store electronics in a container?

The short answer

Usually, and the decision really comes down to how long. Electronics survive heat far better than they survive damp, so a sealed container through one dry season is low risk while a full year unvented is not. The deciding factor is condensation control: dry loading, sealed totes with desiccant, and vents for anything long term.

The call you are actually making

Almost nobody asking this is deciding between a container and a laboratory. They are deciding between a container in the yard and a spare bedroom that is already full, or a garage that floods, or a self storage unit forty minutes away that costs money every month. That is the comparison worth running.

Against those options a steel box does well. It locks harder than a spare room, it stays drier than most garages, and it sits where you can open it at ten at night without driving anywhere. What it does not do is hold a temperature. It tracks the outside air, closely, all year.

So the question stops being can I and becomes for how long, and what am I willing to do about the air inside. Answer those two and the rest falls out.

Heat is survivable. Damp is what kills a board.

People worry about the wrong number first. A closed steel box in July gets hot, and hot is uncomfortable to stand in, but consumer electronics sitting powered off in a hot box are rarely harmed by it. Nothing is running, nothing is generating its own heat, and the temperature swing is slow rather than a shock.

Moisture is the one that does damage, and it does it quietly. Water condensing on a cold surface finds its way onto circuit boards and connector pins, and what it leaves behind is corrosion at the solder joints and green crust on the contacts. That failure shows up the day you plug the thing back in, months after the water that caused it dried up.

The one heat caution worth naming is batteries. Anything with a lithium cell in it, a laptop, a cordless tool pack, a drone, a power bank, is happier somewhere cooler than a closed box in August. Pull those out and keep them in the house.

Pack it the way it shipped, not the way it sat on a shelf

The gear came to you in a sealed carton with foam around it, and that is close to the right idea for storage. Work through it in this order.

  1. Load bone dry. Nothing goes in the same week it was in a damp basement or got rained on in a truck bed. Give it a day inside first.
  2. Use hard totes with a gasket lid, one desiccant pack sealed inside each tote. Cardboard drinks humidity out of the air and passes it straight to what is inside it.
  3. Get the totes on pallets. Floor level is where cool air settles and where any water that reaches the plywood ends up.
  4. Screens stand on edge, never flat and never stacked. Flat panels crack under weight and a stack of them is exactly that.
  5. Leave a gap at the walls so air can pass behind the stack instead of dead-ending against cold steel.

Original boxes are fine to keep for resale value, but put them inside the tote, not the other way around.

Where the answer turns into no

There are a few honest limits. A container is not a server rack: anything that needs to stay powered, cooled and connected belongs in a conditioned building, or in a box we have insulated and wired out as a working space rather than a storage box. Recording gear with felt, foam or leather on it drinks humidity the same way furniture does and needs the same care.

And a year of unvented storage in these mountains is a gamble on nothing but your loading discipline. If it is inventory rather than the spare TV

Shops storing stock face the same physics with more dollars on the line. A vented 40 ft box on your own lot, with racking down one wall and totes on pallets, holds a lot of returns, seasonal stock or install inventory for a flat monthly number that never escalates the way a warehouse lease does.
