corrugation

Also called Corrugated steel panel, Corrugated wall

Definition

Corrugation is the wave pattern pressed into a container's steel side and roof panels, running vertically on the walls, that stiffens thin sheet steel against dents and bowing without adding extra weight or thickness. It is the same principle as corrugated cardboard: folding a flat sheet into ridges makes it far harder to flex than the same sheet left smooth. The corrugation is also why a container's exterior always has that ridged look, whether it is a factory one-trip box or a used cargo-worthy unit with years of wear.

Walk our yard and you can feel it before you can explain it

Walk down a row of containers on our Woodlawn lot and every side wall has the same ridged texture under your hand, running up and down rather than side to side. That is corrugation, and it is on every steel container built to the ISO standard, not a style choice one manufacturer made and others skipped.

It shows up on the roof too, though the pattern there is usually flatter and runs the other direction, since the roof panel has a different job: shedding rain instead of resisting the side impacts a wall takes from forklifts, pallets, and equipment being loaded in and out.

The rule: a folded sheet resists bending, a flat one does not

A flat sheet of 14-gauge steel, on its own, flexes and dents easily under a moderate impact. Fold that same sheet into a series of ridges and it becomes dramatically stiffer across its width, because the corrugation redistributes force along the fold lines instead of letting a single point absorb the whole hit. It is the identical trick behind corrugated cardboard and corrugated roofing panels, applied to structural steel.

This is what lets a container use relatively thin 14-gauge steel for its skin and still shrug off decades outdoors, an average of about 30 years, without the walls needing to be thick or heavy. The corrugation does the stiffening work that extra steel thickness would otherwise have to do.

Corrugation takes the hits so the frame does not have to

Dents, dings, and surface rust in the corrugated panels of a used cargo-worthy container are cosmetic, not structural, because the panels were never carrying the load in the first place. That job belongs to the corner posts and rails. A wavy or heavily dented panel can look rough on a used unit and still leave the box completely sound.
