Also called Hi-cube, HC container
A high-cube container is a standard-length shipping container built one foot taller on the outside, 9 ft 6 in instead of the usual 8 ft 6 in, with the same length and the same footprint as a standard box.
That is the one number that separates a high-cube container from every standard box we stock. A standard container, 20-ft or 40-ft, stands 8 ft 6 in tall on the outside. A high-cube in that same length stands 9 ft 6 in, a full foot taller, and nothing else about the shell changes to get there.
The length stays put. The width stays put, 8 ft either way. Only the roofline moves.
Length and width being fixed, the extra foot goes straight up, not out, and it shows up as usable interior volume. A 40-ft high-cube holds roughly 2,690 cubic feet against about 2,390 in a standard 40-ft, a real jump once you are stacking pallets two-high or fitting a tall piece of equipment through the doorway. Floor space does not grow. You get the same roughly 320 square feet under your feet, just with more air above it.
The practical difference lives overhead: a forklift mast that needs the clearance, a build-out that wants a finished ceiling and still leaves standing headroom, shelving that runs a shelf higher than a standard box allows.
The 40-ft high-cube is a standard part of what we sell, in the same used cargo-worthy and one-trip grades as our other 40-ft boxes, just a foot taller. Ask for that same height in a 20-ft and the answer changes. We do not keep that length sitting on the lot; it gets found and brought in once a job actually needs one, which is how a 10-ft container works here too.
The one thing worth checking before delivery day is overhead clearance at the drop spot, low branches and carport headers included, since that extra foot has to clear something on the way in. See how the two standard sizes compare first in 20-ft versus 40-ft.
