The mistake people make with this word

Buyers occasionally see TEU on a spec sheet or in shipping-industry news and assume it names a type of container, something they should be asking a yard for. It does not. Nobody sells you a TEU. A TEU is a unit of measurement, the way a square foot or a gallon is a unit, and applying it to a purchase order is where the confusion starts.

The mix-up is understandable. TEU is built directly off a real, physical container size, so it sounds like a product name rather than a counting tool. It just is not one.

What TEU actually measures

A TEU is defined as the cargo capacity of one standard 20-ft container. Shipping lines, ports and logistics companies use it to talk about scale without listing every container size involved: a vessel's capacity gets quoted in TEU, a port's annual throughput gets quoted in TEU, and freight volume in ocean shipping reports gets quoted in TEU. It is a way to add up boxes of different lengths on one common scale.

A 40-ft container, being roughly double the length of a 20-ft, counts as two TEU on that scale, which is also its own separate term, FEU.

Where you will actually run into the term

If you work in freight forwarding, import and export, or logistics planning, TEU is everyday vocabulary on bills of lading and capacity reports. If you are a homeowner, a farm or a contractor buying a container to keep on your own property, you will almost never need the word at all. You need a size and a grade, not a shipping-capacity unit.
