A dry van container is the general trade term for an ordinary enclosed steel shipping container, four solid walls, a roof, and cargo doors on one end, with no refrigeration unit and no open top. It is the plainest category in the container world, and it is the category every container we sell falls into.
Dry van is the widest, plainest category in the container trade, and that width is exactly the trap. Two boxes both advertised as dry van containers can be almost nothing alike. One might be a one-trip unit off a recent ocean run, crisp paint, no dents, doors that swing like they were hung yesterday. The other might be a decade-old used cargo-worthy box, honest surface rust, a patched floor panel, still sound but showing every mile it has traveled. Both are, correctly, dry van containers. The term tells you the shape. It does not tell you the shelf life.
Condition swings on the individual box, not on the category, which is why a listing that stops at dry van container and never mentions grade has told you almost nothing useful.
Ask two questions past the label. First, what grade: one-trip, cargo-worthy, wind and watertight, or as-is, each of which promises a different level of wear. Second, has anyone walked the actual box, not a stock photo of a similar one. Doors that open and shut clean, a gasket that is soft instead of cracked, and a floor free of soft spots tell you more than the category name ever will.
A real yard lets you do both. We keep used cargo-worthy and one-trip stock on the ground in Woodlawn and on the sales lot in Wytheville, and you are welcome to open the doors on the exact box before you buy, not a picture of one like it.
The dry van category exists to separate the ordinary box from a handful of specialty designs built for cargo that does not travel well in a plain steel shell. A reefer container carries its own refrigeration unit for temperature-controlled freight. A flat rack has no walls or roof at all, just a floor and two end frames, for oversized loads that hang off the sides. An open-top container swaps the roof for a removable tarp so a crane can load from above.
We do not stock reefers or flat racks. Everything on our lot is a dry van container in one of our two sizes, 20-ft or 40-ft.
