top side rail

Also called Top rail, Container roof rail

Definition

A top side rail is the steel beam running the full length of a container along the top of each side wall, connecting the two top corner castings and giving the roof line its structural edge. It is where the roof bows tie in and where the corrugated roof panel is welded down, and it is the strongest point along the upper wall for anything that needs to be attached above eye level. A container's overall height, 8 feet 6 inches standard or 9 feet 6 inches on a high-cube, is measured to the top of this rail.

The real decision: where can you safely attach something up high

People asking about the top side rail are usually not asking out of curiosity, they are trying to figure out where on a container's upper wall it is safe to fasten something, a gutter, a light fixture, a bracket for an awning or a sign. That decision has one deciding factor, and it is not how the spot looks.

The deciding factor: proximity to the rail, not the panel

The corrugated wall panel below the roofline is thin steel doing a stiffening job, not a fastening job. Drive a lag bolt into the flat of a corrugated panel and you are anchored to sheet steel with nothing solid behind it. The top side rail, by contrast, is a heavy structural beam running the entire length of the wall right at the roofline, and it is the one place along the upper wall built to actually hold a load.

That is why anything meant to hang off the top of a container, from the roof bows carrying the roof panel itself to aftermarket brackets an owner might add, ties back to this rail rather than to the wall panel beneath it. If you are planning to attach something up high, the rail is the target, not the corrugation.

It is also the container's actual height line

When a spec sheet lists a container's height, 8 feet 6 inches for a standard box or 9 feet 6 inches for a high-cube, that measurement runs to the top of this rail, not to some higher point on the roof itself. The roof bows and roof panel sit slightly above it, but the rail is the reference line the industry measures from.
