Can a container sit on railroad ties?

The short answer

Yes, railroad ties can carry a container, but the mistake people make is treating any timber lying in the right general spot as good enough. What matters is the same as any base: the ties need to sit level, land squarely under the four corner castings, and rest on firm ground of their own, not soft dirt that lets a corner settle over a season or two.

The mistake: assuming any tie in roughly the right spot will do

A common shortcut is scrounging a few old ties, laying them down wherever there is room, and calling the base finished. The problem is not the material. Railroad ties are dense, heavy timber and can absolutely carry the weight. The problem is placement done by eye instead of by what the container is actually resting on.

A tie that isn't itself supported by firm ground underneath settles the same way bare dirt would, just with a plank on top of the problem instead of steel sitting directly on it. Rotted or waterlogged ties make that worse, not better.

What actually holds a container level

A container does not spread its weight evenly across the whole floor. It rides on the four bottom corner castings, and that is where the entire load comes down. Support has to be solid and level under those four points, not just somewhere in the general footprint of the box.

Set a tie under empty air between the corners and it does nothing. Set one under a corner and it is doing real work. That distinction is the difference between a base that holds and one that looks fine until the first wet season.

Getting the placement right

Ties should run perpendicular to the container's length, set so one lands squarely under each of the four corner castings, and long enough that no corner is left hanging out over a gap or an edge. Firm, level ground underneath the ties matters exactly as much as it does under gravel or foundation blocks.

How this compares to what we normally set on

Our own default is leveled foundation blocks on a gravel pad or compacted dry soil, because it drains well and gives a predictable, even base every time. That doesn't rule out ties. If you already have a solid set down, the driver checks them the same way he checks any spot on delivery day, as part of the first walk around the property.

Mention what's already there when you call, so it's part of the plan going in rather than something worked out with a loaded truck already on site.

When ties are the wrong call

Old, rotted ties, or ties sitting in a low spot that holds water after rain, are worse than an open gravel pad. Ties on a slope without any grading first just move the same settling problem onto a different material. If a wet week leaves the spot spongy underfoot, it's too soft for a loaded truck regardless of what's laid on top.
