Can you insulate a shipping container?

The short answer

Yes. Our shop insulates with spray foam or rigid panel and finishes over it. The mistake is treating insulation as the whole answer to a damp container. Line a box out with no airflow and the damp simply moves behind the finish, onto steel you can no longer reach or wipe dry. Insulation and vents get specced together.

The mistake: buying insulation to cure a wet ceiling

The call usually starts with water. Somebody opens a container in the spring, finds the ceiling beaded and the boxes underneath damp, and decides the fix is to line the whole thing out. Insulation sounds like the obvious answer because the problem feels like cold.

The problem is not really cold, it is air. Warm air carries moisture and cold steel takes it back out, and overnight the roof panel is the coldest surface in the box. Insulation does help with that, because it keeps the inside face of the wall nearer the temperature of the air touching it, so the roof stops being where water collects.

Here is the part that catches people. Insulation gets finished over. If damp air can still work its way behind that finish and find bare steel, the water still forms, only now it forms in a cavity you cannot open, cannot see, and cannot wipe out. A sealed insulated box with no airflow has not solved the moisture, it has moved it somewhere worse.

The correct approach: one spec, both jobs

Insulation and ventilation are not two options to choose between. They solve two halves of one problem, so an insulated build leaves here with vents already in the spec rather than as a second conversation.

Passive vents let the box swap its air with the outside continuously. There is no fan and nothing to fail. Warm damp air leaves high near the roof line, cooler air comes in low to replace it, and moisture never gets the run of the box long enough to accumulate. Put that alongside insulation and you have a container that stays close to comfortable and stays dry inside the wall as well as on the surface of it.

The reverse works fine. Vents with no insulation behind them suit plain dry storage, and that is how most of our storage boxes are specced. It is insulation with no vents that causes trouble.

Spray foam or rigid panel

We fit both, and neither one is automatically the better answer. They suit different builds.

Spray foam

Foam goes on after the framing and fills everything, including the valleys of the corrugation and the awkward gaps around a header or a wire run. That continuous coverage is its advantage, because there are no seams for air to sneak through and reach steel. It is applied in place, so it is a wet trade in the middle of a build and the sequence has to allow for it.

Rigid panel

Panel goes up in sheets against framing. It is a dry, tidy install, it is easy to work around later if you want to change something, and it suits a build where only part of the box is being treated. The trade is seams and edges, which have to be detailed properly rather than trusted.

Say what the box is for and how much of it you actually stand in, and we will tell you which one fits. Insulating a corner you work in is a different job from lining out a whole 40 ft box, and both are legitimate.

Finishing over it is a job of its own

Insulation on its own is not usually the end of the work. Most people want a wall they can lean a shelf against and a room that reads as a room, which means framing over the insulation and closing it in with finished panel. That is a separate layer stacked on the first one and it is the single biggest reason an insulated build lands in weeks rather than days.

What insulation will not do for you

An insulated container is a slower container. It heats up slower in July and gives it up slower in January, which is the behavior you want in a workshop or an office. What it is not is climate control. On its own it does not hold a temperature, it just makes the swing gentler and gives whatever you put in there a fighting chance.

One more limit worth being clear about. If the build includes electrical, our shop roughs in the panel, boxes, switches and wire runs cleanly, and a licensed electrician handles final hookup and inspection in your jurisdiction. We do not energize it and we do not pull permits. We build it so your electrician has an easy job and a tidy wall to work with.
