Yes. We fit welded shelving or bolt-in racking, and both are built against the container's own structure. Uprights carry the weight down to the floor, where the underframe is made to take it. The corrugated wall only steadies the rack. Brackets screwed straight into that thin panel are what fail, usually the first time somebody loads them.
Watch someone load a shelf that was fastened straight to the corrugation and you can see the problem before anything breaks. Put a few toolboxes on it and the panel behind the fasteners flexes. Push on the end of the shelf and the whole wall moves with it, in and out, like the side of a can.
Nothing has failed yet at that point, and that is the trap. What follows is slow. The fastener holes work slightly larger every time the shelf is loaded and unloaded. The panel takes a permanent dent where the bracket sits. If the container ever gets picked up and hauled, the whole assembly rides down the road swinging on those same holes. Sooner or later one lets go, and by then it has been rusting at the hole for a couple of winters.
Container walls are corrugated because folding thin steel is what makes it stiff, the same reason a folded sheet of paper stands up when a flat one flops over. That stiffness works across the whole panel, resisting the box twisting out of square. The panel was folded to stiffen a wall, not to hold a bracket loaded from one point.
So we do not hang racking off the panel. Uprights run down to the floor and the load travels into the underframe, which is the part of the container built to carry weight. Wall connections are there to locate the rack and keep it from tipping, not to hold up what is on the shelves.
Our shop fits both. Which one you want turns on whether the inside of the box is settled or still moving.
Welded racking is cut and fitted in the shop and stays there. Because the joint is steel to steel there is nothing to work loose, and nothing shifts if the box gets hauled again. The cost of that is you cannot move it later without a torch.
Bolt-in uses fixings, so a wrench takes it apart and puts it back somewhere else. It carries less and it needs a look at the fasteners now and then. Take it when you have not settled what lives in the box, when the use turns over with the season, or when the container is rented and going back to the yard at the end of it.
A 20 ft container is about 160 square feet of floor and a 40 ft is about 320. Those are generous numbers until you fill the middle. A container packed wall to wall gets used from the doors inward, and everything past the first few feet is effectively gone until you unload the front of it.
Racking is what fixes that, because it moves the contents onto the walls and keeps a walkway open the length of the box. The back becomes as reachable as the front. But the aisle has to be planned in, and on a 20 ft box in particular, deep racking down both sides plus a roll-up door barrel overhead can leave less room down the middle than people picture when they draw it out.
Shelving is the mod most often added as an afterthought, and it is one of the ones that most wants to be in the original plan. A walk-in door takes a section of wall you were going to shelve. A window takes another. A roll-up door in the end takes the end wall and the run above the opening. Draw all of that on the same sketch and you will not be surprised by how much wall is left.
One more thing worth saying out loud: if the container is rented, ask before anyone fastens anything to it. We will usually spec bolt-in racking on a rental, and we would much rather build it than have it come back with holes in the wall.
