Roughly 60 pounds per square foot, the uniform load ISO corrugated steel roofs are built to carry without denting. That is more snow than one storm drops around here, wet or dry. What actually causes trouble is water pooling in a roof low spot, an older panel thinned by rust, or ice built up at the door track. Clear heavy wet snow, and check for standing water once it melts.
A shipping container roof isn't a random sheet of steel. It's a corrugated panel built to the ISO standard for container roof strength, and that standard sets a uniform load, roughly 60 pounds per square foot, that the panel has to carry without permanently denting. The corrugations are doing real structural work here, the same reason a sheet of tin foil flops flat but a corrugated roofing panel holds a person's weight.
That figure describes the shape of the panel, not the history of one particular box, so a new panel and a lightly used one carry it about the same. An old, heavily rusted panel doesn't, which is the first thread worth pulling on.
Snow load ratings assume the snow sits flat and even across the whole roof, and real snow almost never does. A container backed under a tree drops slush unevenly. A roof with even a slight dip, from age or a hard bump in transit, lets meltwater pool there instead of running off, and pooled water refreezes into ice that weighs far more than the powder it came from for the same depth.
Rust is the other variable. Fourteen-gauge Cor-Ten steel is built to weather, forming a stable surface layer rather than flaking apart, but a roof that's spent thirty years outside and taken real corrosion has less steel left to carry a load than the day it left the factory. That's part of why grade matters when you're buying used: a cargo-worthy unit still does its job structurally, but it isn't the same panel as one-trip steel.
This corner of Virginia, and the West Virginia and North Carolina counties around it, gets real winter weather, but it isn't lake-effect snow country. A roof rated to shrug off roughly 60 pounds per square foot is built for more than one storm typically drops here, even a heavy one. For most owners, roof snow load is worth knowing, not worth losing sleep over.
The exception is a container doing double duty as a lean-to or carport roof for something else, where drifting or shoveled snow from an adjacent structure lands on top of what fell naturally. That combined load is the one worth thinking through before you build against it.
After a heavy, wet snow, or a snow-then-rain mix that tends to freeze, it's worth clearing the roof the same way you'd clear a porch roof, especially if you can already see a low spot holding water in warmer months. A push broom from the ground reaches most container roofs without anyone climbing up.
Once it melts, walk the container and look for standing water on the roof or pooling at the base. Either one points back to drainage, not the steel's strength, and the fix is usually a crowned pad and blocks under the corners rather than anything done to the roof itself.
