Also called Connex, Sea can, C-can
A conex box is a plain, everyday name for a steel shipping container. It started as U.S. military shorthand for container express, and today it is used interchangeably with sea can, connex and ISO container to mean the same 20-ft or 40-ft box.
Order a conex box from a container yard and a truck shows up with a standard steel shipping container on it, the identical product listed as a container, a connex or a sea can two lots down the road. The word does not point to a different piece of equipment. It points to the same welded steel box, and every dealer in this trade knows what you mean when you say it.
Nothing about the box changes. What shifts is who is talking and where they learned the word. Veterans and their families default to conex because that is the term the Army used for decades. Folks near the Canadian border tend to say sea can. A listing written by a broker who never touches steel might say ISO container to sound precise. None of that vocabulary tells you the size, the grade or the condition of what you are actually buying.
That gap matters more than the name does. Two conex boxes advertised side by side can be a factory-fresh one-trip unit and a rough used cargo-worthy box with two decades of surface rust between them. The word conex covers both. If a size, a condition and a use are not attached to it, you have a nickname, not a quote.
We stock two lengths, 20-ft and 40-ft, in used cargo-worthy and one-trip grades, all genuine 14-gauge weathering steel containers built to the international shipping standard. Call it a conex, a connex or a container, and you will get the same walk-around before it leaves the yard.
If your job needs a size or grade we do not carry off the lot, we will tell you that plainly rather than let the word conex paper over the gap. Start with the full container lineup and skip the vocabulary question entirely.
