Container rain is the trade nickname for condensation inside a steel shipping container: warm, humid air trapped inside rises to the cold roof panel overnight, drops below its dew point, and drips back down onto whatever is stored below. It is not a leak and it is not a defect in the box.
Someone finds a wet ceiling and the first question is always the same one: is the roof leaking, or is this container rain. That decision matters because the fixes are opposite. A leak means find the pinhole and stop water getting in. Container rain means stop moisture that is already inside from finding the cold steel, which is a completely different job.
The deciding factor is the pattern, not how wet things look. A roof leak stays local: one damp streak under one specific spot, worse whenever it actually rains outside. Condensation behaves the opposite way. It spreads evenly across the whole ceiling and shows up hardest on calm, cold, cloudless nights, storm or no storm, sometimes leaving a faint scatter of rust freckles behind after enough cycles. Fourteen-gauge steel tracks the outside air temperature closely. Overnight the roof panel cools faster than the humid air trapped inside the box, and once that steel drops below the air's dew point, moisture has to leave the air and land somewhere. The ceiling is the coldest surface in a closed container, so that is where it lands, and gravity does the rest.
The moisture itself rode in on damp cardboard, wet equipment, unseasoned firewood, ground moisture under a box parked on bare dirt, or simply a humid afternoon when the doors were open long enough to swap the air inside for a fresh, wet batch. For plain storage, dry loading and pallets off the floor solve most of it before you spend a dime, and passive vents give trapped humidity somewhere to go. A desiccant handles a sealed load for a short stretch. None of that requires cutting the box.
For a container you heat, cool, or spend real hours working inside, the dripping ceiling is also a comfort problem, and the deciding factor shifts from how wet things get to how the space actually gets used. That is when insulation paired with ventilation earns its keep, as a custom modification, because it relocates the cold surface somewhere the interior air cannot easily reach, rather than only mopping up the humidity after it lands.
