Desiccant

Also called moisture absorber, desiccant bag

Definition

A desiccant is a moisture-absorbing material, usually silica gel or calcium chloride packed into a hanging bag or canister, that pulls humidity out of the trapped air inside a sealed shipping container. It is a fix for a closed box holding still air, not a fix for a container you open, work in, or ventilate regularly.

The mistake: treating it as a fix for every damp container

People buy a desiccant the way they buy a fire extinguisher, one item that covers the problem, and hang it in the container expecting the moisture issue to go away for good. For a sealed load that stays closed for a season, that is close to right. For a container that gets opened and closed regularly, worked inside, or used year-round, it is the wrong tool, and no amount of desiccant fixes it.

The reason is simple. A desiccant only holds so much moisture before it is spent, and how fast that happens depends entirely on how much new humid air keeps getting let in. Every time the doors open on a muggy day, the container trades its dry indoor air for a whole new load of the outside kind, and whatever the desiccant already absorbed no longer counts for much. A single bag hung once and forgotten is the most common version of this mistake, and it fails exactly when someone assumes it is still working.

The correct approach: match the fix to how the box gets used

For a container packed once and left sealed, a desiccant sized to the load and checked or swapped on a schedule does real work, because the air inside stays still and the moisture load is finite. That covers a lot of what people actually store: household goods during a move, seasonal equipment, paperwork, anything packed dry and shut.

For anything opened regularly, or anything generating its own humidity such as hay, firewood or damp equipment, passive vents do the job a desiccant cannot, because they let humid air trade places with drier outside air continuously instead of absorbing a fixed amount once. For a container someone works or lives in day to day, the right answer usually is not moisture absorption at all, it is insulation paired with ventilation, because that changes where the cold surface sits instead of chasing the humidity around it.

Sizing it and knowing when it is spent

A desiccant sized for a small box does very little in a 40 ft container, and one bag in a corner does not reach the far end. Multiple units placed through the space, sized to the cubic footage, get closer to right than one large one in the doorway.

Most types signal when they are saturated, a color change on the indicator crystal or simply weight, and calcium chloride units collect visible liquid in a reservoir that needs emptying. Check on a schedule rather than waiting for a wet floor to tell you. A saturated desiccant that nobody swaps out is functionally the same as no desiccant at all.
