Corten steel

Also called Cor-Ten steel, Weathering steel

Definition

Corten steel, also called weathering steel, is the 14-gauge corrugated steel used for shipping container walls and roofs, alloyed so its surface rust forms a tight, stable layer that shields the metal underneath instead of flaking off and exposing fresh steel to keep corroding. Left outdoors and maintained normally, a container built from it is rated to hold up for around 30 years.

The decision most buyers are actually making

Someone looking at a used container's rusty-looking surface isn't usually asking what Corten steel is in the abstract, they're asking whether what they're looking at is fine or a problem. That's the real decision, and the answer depends on what kind of rust it actually is.

Corten steel is built to look rusted, that's not a defect, it's the alloy doing exactly what it was designed to do. The question worth asking isn't whether there's rust, there always will be, it's whether that rust has stabilized into a protective layer or is actively eating into the metal.

What decides whether it's protective or a problem

Stable Corten rust is tight, adherent, and roughly the same reddish brown color across a panel, it forms once the steel has had time and normal wet dry cycles to develop its patina, and it actually slows further corrosion. Active corrosion looks different: flaking, bubbling paint, rust that comes off on your hand, or pitting that's visibly eating a hole through the panel.

Where you find it matters too. A gasket line, a low corner that holds standing water, or a spot where two metals touch and trap moisture are where active corrosion shows up first, not out on a flat wall panel doing its job.

Corten versus ordinary mild steel

Plain mild steel rusts the same way Corten does at first, but it doesn't stop there, the rust keeps flaking away and exposing new metal underneath indefinitely. That's why mild steel needs continuous paint or coating to survive outdoors, while Corten's whole design point is that the rust itself becomes the long-term protection once it stabilizes.

Where Corten still needs help

The alloy protects flat, exposed panels well, but low spots that pool water, gaps where debris collects, and areas where the factory paint has been scraped away and never touched up are all places the normal weathering process can be interrupted. Regular painted maintenance on a used container, especially at the bottom rails, extends the life the steel is otherwise built to deliver.

No. Stainless steel resists rust through its chromium content and generally doesn't rust at all. Corten steel is a different alloy that's designed to rust on the surface and then stop, using that stable rust layer as its protection.
Not necessarily. Corten steel is supposed to have a rusted surface appearance. What matters is whether the rust is a stable, tight layer or active flaking and pitting, which is worth checking in person on any used container.
