What actually varies from one container to the next

Every steel dry container leaves the factory with a couple of these vents built in, but what you get in a Woodlawn yard forty years and several owners later is not what left the factory. A one-trip box usually still has clean, open vents doing exactly what they were built to do. A used cargo-worthy unit is a different story: vents get painted over during a repaint, packed with dirt from years outdoors, or dented shut by cargo that shifted in transit.

That is the thing to check, not assume, when you are looking at a specific box. Walk up to it and look at the vent openings from outside, then check the inside for daylight or airflow. A vent that has been sealed by paint is not doing anything for you no matter what the spec sheet says a factory vent is supposed to do.

Why a sealed steel box needs a vent at all

A shipping container built for ocean freight is meant to be watertight, so the factory vent is a deliberate compromise: a small opening sized to let a trace of air move without letting rain, dust, or bugs in easily. On a cargo ship that trace of airflow keeps humidity from building to the point where condensation ruins the freight inside.

On a stationary container in your yard, that same small opening does the same physics on a smaller scale. It will not stop what the trade calls container rain, the condensation that beads on a cold roof panel overnight, but it gives a closed box one place for a little humidity to escape instead of none.

Not the same thing as a ventilation modification

Factory vents are built in at the mill and are not something we sell, price, or add on a job. If you need real airflow, for hay, firewood, or anything that makes its own moisture, that is a different job: cutting and fitting louvered vents sized and placed for your load, done as a custom modification, not a factory feature.

The two get confused because they look similar from across the yard. The difference is purpose and size. A factory vent is a small, fixed opening meant for a box in transit. An added ventilation vent is sized and placed on purpose for what is going to sit inside a stationary container for months at a time.
