Mini-split

Also called Ductless heat pump, Mini split system

Definition

A mini-split is a ductless heating and cooling system: a small indoor head unit mounted on the wall, connected by refrigerant lines to an outdoor condenser, with no ductwork run through the container. It heats and cools an insulated space efficiently, but sizing it right depends on that specific container's insulation, size and exposure, not a single number that works for every box.

Why the same size box can need a different unit

Two containers of the same size can need two different mini-split units. Whether the box is insulated with spray foam or rigid panel, how much of the day it sits in direct sun, whether it's tucked against a hillside or standing exposed on flat ground, all of it changes how hard the unit has to work to hold a set temperature. A bare 40-ft container and a fully insulated, finished 40-ft office are not the same load, even though they're the same steel.

Elevation and terrain matter here more than in a typical house build. Swings between a cold Blue Ridge morning and an afternoon in full sun are wider than what a unit sized off a generic chart accounts for.

How to pin down the right size

The reliable way to size a mini-split is against the specific build: the finished square footage, the insulation type going in, the window and door count, and how the space is actually going to be used, an office running most days versus a workshop used a few hours at a time. We spec insulation, ventilation and the mini-split together for that reason, since each one changes what the others need to do.

Skipping straight to a unit size without that context is how people end up either running a unit too small to keep up on the coldest morning, or paying for cooling capacity a well-insulated 20-ft box never uses.

What our shop handles, and what it doesn't

What our shop delivers is the groundwork: a panel, the outlet, and the switch box positioned wherever the mini-split will hang. From there, a licensed electrician takes over, connects power to the unit itself, and clears it with your local inspector. Pulling a permit, flipping the breaker on for good, and signing off on the work all sit outside what we do.

Put a mini-split in a container that's already insulated and it holds a set temperature without much strain. Skip the insulation and that same unit spends most of its effort fighting bare, conductive steel instead of comfortably heating or cooling the room.

Whether a build needs one at all

Boxes full of tools, feed, or furniture aren't fighting temperature, they're fighting stale, trapped air, and a good set of vents solves that on its own most of the time. A mini-split is worth the cost once a person is actually spending real hours in the space week after week, an office, a working shop, or contents that genuinely can't tolerate a hot afternoon.

It can be wired in, but it will fight the bare steel constantly. A mini-split is built for an insulated, finished space, and pairing the two is how the space actually holds a temperature.
