Spray foam insulation

Also called Closed-cell spray foam, SPF

Definition

Spray foam insulation starts as a liquid that gets sprayed onto the inside of a container's corrugated steel, then expands and cures into a single solid layer stuck fast to the metal underneath it. It's one of two ways our shop insulates a container, the other being rigid panel, and it tends to get picked when keeping moisture out of the wall matters just as much as holding a temperature.

The decision this term usually comes up in

Most people searching spray foam insulation aren't trying to learn chemistry, they're standing between two options for the same job: spray foam or rigid panel, and trying to figure out which one fits their build. Both hold heat. The difference that actually decides it is somewhere else.

The deciding factor: how worried are you about moisture

Because the foam sticks straight to the steel with nothing left open behind it, there's no pocket of trapped air where humidity can quietly reach cold metal and drip where you'd never see it. That's why it tends to win out for sealed short-term storage, a shop that runs humid part of the year, or any box where the finished wall goes up and stays up, no one's opening it back up to inspect the inside.

Rigid panel earns its place a different way: it slots into studs and framing that a build needs anyway for running wires or hanging finishes, and a stray seam behind the panel isn't the thing that decides whether that build succeeds.

What spray foam alone doesn't solve

Insulation, spray foam included, keeps the surface you can see warmer, which is why the ceiling stops dripping in a foamed container. It doesn't remove humidity from the air inside the box. If moist air still has somewhere to reach a cold spot, an unsealed penetration, a gap around a new door or vent, condensation carries on happening where you can't see it.

We spec ventilation and spray foam together for exactly this reason. A well-sealed box still needs a way for humid air to leave rather than sit.

Who actually needs it, and who doesn't

A container turning into an office, a workshop someone actually stands in for hours, or storage for something sensitive to swings in temperature is where spray foam pays off, once it's got a mini-split or a small HVAC unit and proper airflow working alongside it to carry the space through both a cold Blue Ridge winter and a sticky Virginia summer. A box holding ordinary tools, feed or equipment is usually a different story: what that space needs most is air moving through it, and a good vent layout on its own often covers that without foam involved at all.

There isn't a flat winner between the two, the right pick depends on the build. Lean toward spray foam when keeping moisture out is the top priority, and toward rigid panel when the container is already getting framed out for other reasons anyway.
It reduces the risk by removing air gaps, but ventilation still matters. We spec insulation and vents together so humid air has somewhere to go.
