Rigid panel insulation

Also called Foam board insulation, Rigid foam

Definition

Rigid panel insulation is solid foam board cut and fitted between a framed interior wall and a container's steel skin, rather than sprayed or bonded to it. It suits a build that's already being framed out for wiring, shelving or a finished interior, but every seam and penetration behind the panel has to be sealed by hand, and that's the step that decides whether it works.

The mistake: treating it like a drywall job

Rigid panel goes in behind a framed wall, which makes it feel like a normal interior build, cut a panel, fit it, move on. Treated that way, small gaps around the frame, at corners, or around a penetration for wiring or a vent get left unsealed because they look minor. On a house, that's a small efficiency loss. On a steel container, it's the exact path moist air needs to reach cold metal it can't be seen touching.

Unlike spray foam, which bonds to the corrugated steel with nothing behind it, rigid panel leaves a real air space between the panel and the steel unless every seam is deliberately closed.

The correct approach: seal every seam before it's covered

Rigid panel done right means taping and sealing panel joints, closing gaps at framing and corners, and sealing around every penetration before the interior finish goes up and hides the work. Once the wall is closed in, that seam is out of reach, so it has to be right the first time, not checked later.

Done that way, rigid panel performs the same job spray foam does, keeping the cold surface out of reach of moist interior air, just by a different construction method.

Why rigid panel is still the right call for some builds

If a container's already getting framed out, studs, wiring runs, shelving backing, rigid panel fits naturally into that same framing step rather than requiring the foam to be sprayed first and framed around after. That sequencing is the real reason to pick it over spray foam, not cost or performance on its own.

What still has to happen after the panel goes in

Any insulation method warms up the wall or ceiling you can actually touch, which is why a foamed or paneled interior quits sweating on top. Behind that surface, the raw steel hasn't gotten any warmer on its own, it's only shielded from the air that used to reach it. A vent layout still earns its place in the plan, and a vapor barrier frequently goes over rigid panel to give the seam work a second, unbroken line of defense.

We spec rigid panel, its seam sealing, and ventilation together on every job. Skipping the seal step to save time is the single most common way a rigid panel build ends up damp behind a finished wall months later.
It can perform just as well, but only if every seam and penetration gets sealed by hand before the wall is closed in. Spray foam arrives sealed as part of how it's applied; rigid panel gets there through extra installation steps instead.
It's often added over rigid panel to back up the seam work with a continuous layer, especially on a build meant for year-round use.
