The mistake: assuming the name tells you what you're getting

People hear non-operating reefer and guess one of two wrong things. Either they assume it still refrigerates, just weaker or older, or they assume the word non-operating means broken and worthless. Neither is right. The machinery is gone or dead on purpose, not failing, and what's left behind is deliberately kept because the insulated walls still have value even without a compressor bolted to the end.

What a non-operating reefer actually is

A reefer starts life as an insulated steel box with a refrigeration unit built into one end. When that unit reaches the end of its service life, or a seller wants to move the box without the cost of running the machinery, the unit gets pulled or shut down for good and the shell gets sold on its own. What's left is a container with thicker insulated walls than a standard box, and nothing to keep it cold.

The correct approach if insulation is the actual goal

If what you're really after is a well insulated box, not a refrigerated one, don't go hunting for an NOR specifically, ask what problem you're solving instead. Where NORs usually turn up instead

You'll mostly see non-operating reefers sold by container brokers and depots that handle a lot of decommissioned reefer fleet, not by a yard our size that focuses on stocking standard steel. If a broker offers you one, the shell itself is a real and useful piece of equipment, it just isn't something we source or carry ourselves.
