A 20 or 40 ft ISO container, bought or rented, delivered and set level with the lockbox already welded on. Rural Retreat is about 45 road miles from the yard, inside the free zone.
Rural Retreat sits on the I-81 corridor between Wytheville and Marion, about 45 road miles from our Woodlawn yard. Our route is I-77 north to the Fort Chiswell interchange and then I-81 southwest, and the whole trip stays inside our 75 road mile free delivery and leveling zone.
It is a small incorporated town, 1,546 people at the 2020 census, sitting at about 2,513 feet. Around it is the kind of Wythe County ground that has always run on cattle, hay, and equipment, which is also a decent description of what people around here put in containers.
Free delivery means the trip and the set are already in the price. No mileage line, no fuel surcharge, and no lockbox add-on.
Rural Retreat was originally called Mount Airy, and changed its name to stop the confusion with the other communities using it. We deliver to the Mount Airy that kept the name too, about 22 road miles south of the yard in North Carolina, which is a small piece of trivia that comes up more often than you would think on the phone.
The town grew up around the railroad, and the Rural Retreat Depot went on the National Register of Historic Places in 2014. What has not changed is the working character of the county around it: hay ground, cattle, equipment that has to live somewhere between seasons, and shops that outgrew their buildings.
Elevation matters here more than people expect. At 2,500 feet you get real winter, and a steel box that is dry, off the mud, and lockable beats a tarp and a fence line every time.
The 20-ft, at about 160 square feet, is the workhorse for tools, parts, feed, and seasonal gear. The 40-ft, at about 320, is what people take when they are storing implements, long material, or enough inventory that they need to walk around inside it.
Every unit is used cargo-worthy or one-trip, wind and watertight, with the doors working and the lockbox already welded on when it arrives. That is true whether you buy it or rent it.
Condensation is the one thing worth thinking about ahead of time on a farm container at this elevation, especially if you are storing anything that minds moisture. Our condensation guide covers what causes it and what actually fixes it, and vents are a common, simple modification we build in our own shop.
For the farm-specific version of all this, see containers for farm and agriculture.
Delivery is a tilt-bed drop. The trailer backs in, tilts, and eases forward while the container slides off, which means the truck needs a straight approach rather than a tight turn at the end. Sixty to a hundred feet of clear run is the usual requirement.
The rest of what we look at:
We set it level and check the doors before pulling out. If the spot needs work first, the foundation guide covers what to put underneath.
On rules, Rural Retreat is an incorporated town inside a county with an unusual zoning situation, so the town and the county are two different conversations. Our Wythe County permit page explains both.
Used cargo-worthy 20-ft containers start around $3,200 delivered inside the free zone and 40-ft units start around $4,900. Renting runs from $165 a month for a 20-ft and $235 a month for a 40-ft, month to month with no contract.
Rural Retreat is inside the free zone, so those delivered numbers apply here without a mileage adjustment. What moves the price is grade and size, not the drive.
If the need is seasonal, renting first is often the honest answer, and renting before buying walks through when that makes sense.
