Yes, passive vents work for what they're built to do: letting warm, moist air escape high and drier air enter low so humidity doesn't build up against a cold roof overnight. They run on no power and nothing moves. What they can't do is control temperature, so don't expect them to keep a container cool in July or warm in January.
Most people asking whether vents work aren't really asking about physics. They're trying to decide whether a few openings in the wall are enough, or whether they need to spend more on insulation, or nothing at all beyond a stack of pallets. The deciding factor isn't the container, it's what's going into it and for how long.
Sealed short-term storage, a move between houses, a winter layover, barely needs anything. Plain dry goods staying a season or more is exactly what passive vents are built for. Anything that makes its own moisture, hay, firewood, a workshop where people are cutting and welding, needs airflow as a baseline requirement, not an upgrade.
A passive vent doesn't dry the air by itself. It gives the box a way to trade the humid air already inside for drier air from outside, continuously, with nothing to plug in and nothing to fail. Warm air naturally rises and wants to leave through a high opening, but it can only do that if cooler air is free to come in low to replace it. That's why placement matters more than how many you install.
A row of vents all at the same height barely moves air at all, since there's nothing pulling replacement air in. Split high and low, on opposite walls where possible, and you get real exchange instead of a couple of openings that mostly let bugs in.
Vents move air, full stop. They don't chill it, they don't dehumidify it, and they won't hold a container at a set temperature. On a July afternoon they'll keep a closed steel box from turning into an oven, but they won't make it cool. If you need the inside to hold a temperature for people working in it, or for gear sensitive to heat, that's an insulation and small HVAC conversation, not a vent conversation.
Vents also don't replace pulling contents up off the floor or loading things dry in the first place. They're one part of managing moisture, not the whole plan.
If we're insulating a container for you, ventilation goes into the same plan, not as an upsell after the fact. Insulation warms the surface you can see, which stops the ceiling from dripping, but the steel behind that finish is still cold. Without a way to move air, moisture can still find that cold steel through a seam or a gap, and now it's condensing somewhere you can't see it, behind a finished wall. Vents are what keep that from happening.
A 40 ft container generally needs more vents than a 20 ft one, not because it's longer but because air in the middle of the box has further to travel to find an opening. What you're storing matters more than the container size for deciding the count. A straightforward vent job on a box you already own is one of the quicker mods our shop turns around. Bundled into a bigger build with insulation and wiring, it becomes part of a longer timeline, and either way you get the real schedule in writing before we start.
