Why won't my container door close?

The short answer

Usually the ground moved, not the door. Even a small settle under one corner racks the steel frame slightly, and a racked door binds before its locking bars can seat. Rust built up in the cam and keeper, a bent locking bar, or a swollen gasket cause the same symptom. Check for level first, then look at the hardware before you assume the door itself is bad.

The corner that settled is the usual culprit

When a door that used to swing shut and latch clean now drags or won't quite catch, the first place to look isn't the door. It's the ground under the corner nearest that door. A container carries its entire weight on its four corner castings, so if one corner sinks even half an inch into soft ground, the whole steel frame twists slightly out of square. The doors show it first, because they're the one moving part on an otherwise rigid box.

You can usually spot it by eye. Stand back and sight down the seam where the two doors meet. A racked frame shows up as a gap that's tight at the top and wide at the bottom, or the reverse, instead of an even reveal top to bottom. If your container sits on bare dirt or gravel that was never compacted, or on blocks nobody's checked since the first hard winter, that's the place to start.

A level container is a container whose doors work. That's the actual reason we check level on every delivery, not just to make it look tidy.

The locking bars are doing the real work

Every cargo door closes with a set of vertical locking bars, one per leaf, that rotate and drop steel cams into keepers welded onto the frame. That's the actual mechanism, not a single latch you can jiggle. If a bar gets bent, even slightly, from a forklift bump or a load shifting against it in transit, the cam won't seat cleanly and the handle fights you the last inch.

Rust is the other common cause, especially on a container that's spent a while outdoors. The cam pins and keeper slots pick up surface rust like the rest of the shell, and enough buildup narrows the tolerance until a bar that used to drop freely starts hanging up. Penetrating oil and a wire brush on the cam and keeper themselves, not the whole door, usually frees it back up.

Debris and a swollen gasket do the same trick, a smaller way

The rubber gasket around the door opening is what keeps a wind and water tight container dry, and it's soft enough to swell after staying wet for a stretch, or stiffen and warp after enough seasons of freeze and thaw. Either way, a gasket that's changed shape adds resistance right where the door needs the least of it.

Simpler than that: check what's actually sitting in the track. Gravel, mud, a stray tool, or just packed dirt kicked up against the sill will stop a door from swinging fully shut long before you ever reach the hardware. It sounds too obvious to be the answer, and it's the answer more often than people expect.

Mud season and frost make it worse, not just wear over time

A door that closed fine all summer and starts binding in late winter is often telling you about the ground, not the steel. Frost heave can lift a corner slightly through a hard freeze, and the spring thaw that follows softens the same ground back down, so a container that sat perfectly level in October can shift a little by March without anyone touching it. Gravel that looked compacted a year ago settles more than people expect once enough freeze and thaw cycles work through it.

That's worth knowing before you blame the hardware. If the door only started sticking with the season, check the low corner before you reach for a wrench, since re-leveling costs less time than pulling a locking bar apart for nothing.

What to try, and when to stop trying

  • Sight down the door seam for an uneven gap, the tell for a racked frame.
  • Clear the track and sill by hand before touching any hardware.
  • Work penetrating oil into the locking bar cams and keepers, then run the handle through its full swing a few times.
  • Check the blocks or pad underneath for a corner that's settled since delivery.

If the frame itself is racked, forcing the door is the wrong move. It can bend a locking bar further or crack a weld that was fine last week. Re-leveling the container, usually a matter of shimming or resetting the low corner, fixes the door as a side effect, because the door was never the actual problem.
