Usually not for plain storage. Tools, equipment and household goods need airflow far more than they need insulation, and a bare steel box with vents keeps them dry for less money. Insulation earns its cost when people work inside the box, or when contents are sensitive to heat and cold, because it changes where the cold surface sits and makes a small heater or mini split worth running.
The mistake we see most is treating insulation as a default upgrade, something you add because it sounds like the responsible choice for any container that's going to sit for a while. For plain storage, tools, feed, furniture, equipment, that's spending money to solve a problem vents already solve for less. Insulation doesn't do anything for airflow, and airflow is what actually keeps stored goods dry.
The opposite mistake shows up just as often: insulating a workshop or office build and stopping there, without adding ventilation. That one is worse, because it doesn't just waste money, it hides a moisture problem instead of fixing it.
Start with what the box is for, not with the container itself. If it's dry storage, plain steel with a few well-placed vents is the right, complete answer. If people will actually spend time inside, a shop bench, a desk, anything you'll heat or cool, that's when insulation is worth having, because it turns the shell into something a person can work in through more than two comfortable seasons a year.
Bare fourteen-gauge steel puts no buffer at all between you and the weather. Park it in full sun and the inside gets hotter than the yard around it. Leave it out under a clear sky overnight and the interior surfaces drop below the air they enclose. That swing is what limits an uninsulated container to spring and fall for comfortable work, and it's also part of what drives condensation on the coldest nights.
Ask yourself two questions. Will someone be inside this box working, not just retrieving or storing something, on a regular basis? And does anything you're keeping in it mind real heat or cold, finishes, adhesives, batteries, electronics? A yes to either one tips the answer toward insulation. Two no's means you're almost certainly better off spending on vents and pallets instead.
Insulation also changes what a heater or mini split can do for you. Putting a small unit into a bare steel box is close to heating the outdoors, since the steel gives up whatever warmth you produce almost as fast as you make it. Insulate first and that same small unit holds the space easily, because it's working against a wall instead of straight through one.
Insulating a container changes where the cold surface sits, it doesn't remove it. A bare box drips on the ceiling you can see. An insulated box with no way to move air can still condense, just on the steel behind the finished wall where nobody notices until something smells wrong. That's why our shop specs ventilation into every insulated build from the start rather than treating it as an add-on later.
The systems we install are spray foam, which bonds directly to the corrugated steel with no gap for moisture to hide behind, and rigid panel, which fits into a framed interior and suits a build that's getting wired and finished anyway. Which one fits depends on the build, not a general ranking, and we'll walk through that with you before anything is cut.
An insulated build that's going to run a heater or mini split usually means talking about power. Our shop roughs in the panel, outlets and switches as part of that work. A licensed electrician you bring in handles the final hookup and the inspection; we don't pull the permit or energize it ourselves. Plan for that step rather than being surprised by it once the insulation is in.
