It is built to carry rolling loads like a forklift. The container's weight rides on the four corner castings, not the floor, which is why a solid floor with no soft spots still matters.

Walk into one at the yard and here's what's under your boots

Step inside any container in Woodlawn and the floor under you is thick marine-grade plywood, laid in a single run from door to door, bolted down to steel crossmembers you can see running side to side if you look underneath. It feels solid enough to drive a hand truck across without a hint of give, which is exactly the point of building it that way.

That plywood isn't a cosmetic layer sitting on top of a steel pan. The crossmembers underneath, spaced roughly every couple of feet across the full width, are what the plywood is fastened to, and they're what carries load across to the container's structural frame.

Why plywood, not a steel deck

A steel floor would rust and get slick fast, and it would transmit cold straight through in winter and heat straight up in summer, which makes for a miserable surface to stand or work on. Marine-grade plywood, built in bonded layers with water-resistant glue, handles moisture far better than ordinary construction plywood and takes the daily abuse of forklifts, pallet jacks, and dragged equipment without splintering the way a lighter panel would.

It's the same logic freight trailers use, and for the same reason: plywood over a steel frame gives you a durable, grippy work surface that bare steel doesn't.

The rule behind it: the corners carry the weight, not the floor

Here's the part that surprises people setting a container on blocks or stacking one: the entire structural weight of the box, and everything loaded inside it, rides down through the four corner castings at each end, not through the middle of the floor. That's why containers stack safely eight or nine high on a ship, corner post to corner post, and why a container can sit on blocks under just those four corners instead of a continuous slab.

The floor still has to be solid, because you're standing and working on it, but it isn't the load path holding the structure up. That distinction is also why a soft spot in the middle of a floor is a real defect worth flagging on a used container, even though it won't make the whole box collapse.

What actually wears out a floor over time

Standing water is the main enemy, whether from a leak overhead or from the box sitting on ground that never drains. Marine-grade plywood resists moisture far better than regular plywood, but resists isn't immune, and years of dampness against the underside will eventually soften it. A heavy point load, like a single stack of pallets parked in one spot for years, can also compress a section faster than the same weight spread across the whole floor.

What to check on a used container's floor before you buy

Walk the whole surface and look for staining, warping, or a change in color that suggests old water damage, then press down near the walls and doors where moisture collects first. A floor with light scuffs and normal wear from years of loading is exactly what you'd expect on a cargo-worthy unit. A floor with soft spots, visible sag between crossmembers, or a smell that hits you at the door is a different story.

Does floor thickness differ between a 20-ft and a 40-ft

No. Both sizes use the same recipe of marine-grade plywood over steel crossmembers, just run over more length on a 40-ft. A 20-ft covers about 160 square feet, a 40-ft about 320, but the flooring itself, the thickness, the bonding, and how it's fastened down, doesn't change between them.
