What wind can a shipping container take?

The short answer

No container carries a wind rating, so ignore any speed figure you read online. The number that governs is weight. An empty 20 ft box runs roughly 4,800 to 5,100 pounds and an empty 40 ft roughly 8,000 to 8,800, with the exact tare painted on its own door. Loaded, latched and set level on blocks, it stays where we put it.

The number stencilled on the door

There is no wind speed stamped anywhere on a shipping container, and any mph figure on a broker site was written by somebody who never had one on a trailer. The number that governs is tare weight, and it is painted right on the door beside the CSC plate on every unit standing in our Woodlawn yard.

Expect roughly 4,800 to 5,100 pounds for an empty 20 ft and roughly 8,000 to 8,800 for an empty 40 ft. Those are ballpark figures for used equipment that varies by build year and manufacturer, so read the door on the box you are actually buying rather than trusting a chart.

That weight is why a container sits quiet through weather that folds up a carport. Two and a half tons of welded steel bearing on four corner castings has no interest in going anywhere, and a load inside pushes the figure up fast. A full box is a calmer box in a blow.

Wind gets its leverage on the long side

Set on the ground, a 40 ft container shows roughly 340 square feet of flat steel to a wind coming at its side, since it stands 8 feet 6 inches tall and runs 40 feet long. A 20 ft shows about 170. Turn either one so the wind meets an end wall instead and the exposed face drops to about 68 square feet, because the box is only 8 feet wide.

That is a real difference and it costs nothing. If your spot has a prevailing wind, and most ridgetop and open field spots do, tell us which way to turn the box when you mark the drop point. The doors are the part you want out of the weather anyway, so pointing them downwind usually settles both questions at once.

Three things that make a box lighter than it looks

Weight only helps while the weight is there and while the wind has nothing to grab. Three situations undo it:

  • An empty box on a long vacancy. A container waiting on a build that has not started sits at its lightest for months. That is the case where anchoring is worth a conversation.
  • Doors left standing open. Wind gets behind an open cargo door and slams it hard enough to bend the locking bars. Latch both doors and drop the padlock every time.
  • Sitting too high on stacked block. Blocks under the corner castings are correct and we set every drop that way. A tall stack on a soft or uncrowned pad lifts the floor and hands the wind a run underneath. Fix the pad instead of stacking higher, and our container foundation guide covers how.

What the ridges do to a wind number anyway

Any generic wind figure assumes flat open country, and we do not have that. Between the Blue Ridge and the New River the wind gets squeezed through gaps and accelerated over ridge lines, so two properties four miles apart can see very different gusts out of the same front.

It takes a serious gust, but an empty box on exposed high ground with its long broadside to the wind is the case where it becomes possible. A loaded container, or one sited behind a windbreak, is a different story. Weight and exposure are the two levers you control.
Just latch both doors properly and lock them. The locking bars and the welded lockbox already hold the doors tight to the frame. What causes damage is a door left swung open where a gust can catch it.
