Condensation. Warm, moist air trapped inside the box rises to the steel roof, and once that steel cools below the dew point overnight, water comes out of the air and drips back down. It is not a leak. What changes the severity is how humid the load was going in, how ground and season swing the ceiling's temperature, and whether the box has any airflow.
Every container holds a volume of air, and that air carries moisture depending on what went in with it and what the weather was doing on loading day. As the sun works on the steel through the afternoon, that trapped air warms and can hold more water. Once night falls and the roof panel gives its heat back to the sky, the steel cools faster than the air inside it can follow. The first surface to reach the dew point is the ceiling, since it is the coldest thing in the box, and that is where beads of water start to form and eventually run.
None of that requires a hole anywhere in the steel. A wind and water tight container is still doing exactly what it is supposed to do: keeping outside rain and snow out. The water beading on your ceiling was already inside the box as vapor before the doors ever shut for the night.
Carroll County and the country around it get warm, sticky summer afternoons followed by nights that drop fast once the sun is down, especially up toward the ridgelines. That kind of daily swing is exactly what pulls condensation out of the air, because the bigger the temperature drop after dark, the further below the dew point the roof falls. Spring and fall tend to be the worst stretches of the year for it, since a mild, damp afternoon followed by a clear, cold night is close to a perfect setup.
This isn't specific to shipping containers. Any all-steel structure out here, a barn roof, a machine shed, a trailer parked overnight, sweats under the same conditions. A container just seals tighter than most of them, so whatever moisture rode in with your load has nowhere to escape unless you give it a path.
The two look similar the first time you find them, but the pattern gives it away fast. Condensation shows up as an even film or scattering of drops across the whole ceiling, sometimes with a fine dusting of surface rust developing where it keeps happening, and it tends to show up after clear, cold nights rather than during storms. A real leak leaves a single wet trail below one specific point, seam or fastener, and it tracks with rainfall, not with temperature swings.
Most of that costs nothing beyond attention. Vents and insulation are worth specifying once you know what's going in, and our shop builds both in house on any container you buy or rent from us.
Check the box after the big seasonal swings, the first real cold snap in fall and the first warm stretch in spring, because that's when the gap between day and night temperatures is widest and condensation does most of its damage. A five-minute look at that point catches a problem while it's still a wipe-down, not a ruined load. Paper, fabric, feed and anything upholstered are the first things to suffer, so give those the closest look if you're storing them.
