Container Glossary

pallet-wide container

Also called Euro-pallet-wide container

Definition

A pallet-wide container is a shipping container built a few inches wider than the standard 8-foot ISO width so two European pallets fit side by side without wasted space. It's a European rail and road standard, not a size Containers Delivered stocks, sells, or sources.

The decision this term is really about: whose pallet are you fitting?

If pallet-wide container turned up in your search, the decision underneath it is about pallet fit, not storage capacity. A standard ISO container is 8 feet wide inside the corner posts, and a full-size American pallet or a Euro-pallet can be a tight, wasteful fit side by side. The pallet-wide design widens the box by a few inches specifically to close that gap for European Euro-pallets, sized at 1.2 by 0.8 meters.

That's the deciding factor: this container exists to solve a European rail and road logistics problem, fitting two rows of a specific pallet size without waste. If you're not moving Euro-pallets on European rail, the extra width buys you nothing you'd notice.

Why it isn't on our lot

Pallet-wide containers run outside the standard ISO width, which means they don't interchange cleanly with the ocean-going container fleet or the handling equipment built around the 8-foot standard. Containers Delivered stocks genuine 8-foot-wide ISO boxes, the kind that moves by ship, rail, and truck anywhere in the world, in 20-ft and 40-ft lengths. A pallet-wide unit isn't a size we source to order the way we handle other specialty requests, it's a different standard entirely.

The gap is small on paper, a few inches of extra width, but it's enough to change how a container fits on a chassis and through the corner-casting hardware built around the 8-foot figure. That's a manufacturing decision made for a European pallet grid, and it has no bearing on a driveway, a farm, or a jobsite here.

What decides your order instead

For storage, a jobsite, or a farm in Virginia, West Virginia, or North Carolina, the decision that matters is length, not a few inches of extra pallet clearance: 20-ft or 40-ft. See our guide to container vocabulary for the full picture, or go straight to 20-ft vs 40-ft to make that call.

No. We sell standard 8-foot-wide ISO containers in 20-ft and 40-ft lengths, not the European pallet-wide standard.
Enough to fit two Euro-pallets side by side without waste, typically a few extra inches over the standard 8-foot ISO width.
